Hi,
I'm trying to find a spouse for John Curnow, baptised 3 June 1810 in Ludgvan, son of John Curnow & Mary Noall. It seems many people think it's Alice Bottrell Pearce, but I'm sure I read on these boards that this is a different John Curnow.
From what I can find out, it may be either Mary Ann Clarke or Mary Eddy, but after many hours of trying to prove which one, I have to admit defeat.
Any help appreciated, thanks

Hi again I'm afraid it often takes a lot more than many hours to sort out just one person, because it's all part of a huge jigsaw! And it will take many many years to work out "all" the Curnows, if that is what you are trying to do. I would suggest that you not only search for John Curnows born c.1806 +/- 5 years in the censuses (& don't forget silly ages are recorded sometimes, so also track the possible wives you have on your shortlist) And I hope you got wives' names from OPC, FS or similar. Not, please, from other people's trees....... There is a lot of misleading rubbish out there on Curnow trees! You will want to find each of the John Curnows, in order to then look at all the surrounding information - names of children, where the siblings were (nearby?), the extent of potential marriages between 1st cousins, which countries siblings emigrated to etc. - to properly determine for yourself which is which. (And those different sets of information are all relevant in differentiating the 3 John Curnow marriages you mention. ) Suggestion: Try the U.S censuses, as well as UK censuses & sites such as www.castlegarden.org & /familysearch.org for U.S. immigrations & burials - & of course look at the UK burial ages of John Curnows, so as to tie them to the right family. And if you make no progress, go round the houses i.e. put in place siblings for example that are fairly easily identifiable, then you can come back to some of these challenging people at a later stage in your research. Although there was some discussion years ago on this board involving the John Curnow who married Alice Bottrell Pearce, I don't believe final researched conclusions were recorded on this board, but rather - certainly in my case - were resolved by research over many many months/years, and deliberations were held elsewhere. Besides, the fun is in the journey as much as reaching the destination, don't you think? If you follow the suggestions above re siblings etc., you will get there - eventually!! Sue

Hi Sue, Thanks again for your wisdom. Yes, I always try to verify things before I put them on my tree, and agree there are so many boo-boos on peoples trees.
This is actually hubby's tree, and the Curnows are very, very distant relations, so if I spend a day or two on one person, & I am satisfied I have searched all my available options, I usually move on and come back later, which is what I think I'll do in this case.
Thanks again, Yvonne
