Hello Debbie and Welcome to the site. To save duplication and confusion I have removed your other 'new to this forum' post. And once we can establish which Parish the discussion belongs to I will consider moving the topic. Now then, I think it may be a good idea if you were to supply us with a little more information. Firstly I am not quite sure what you are looking for but the more important problem to resolve right now is the time-period you are talking about. It would also be helpful to know when John and Johanna came to Australia and which State they came to. I also think it might be a very good idea to work on John and Johanna themselves for a start because after a brief look I can see huge possibilities for confusion and wrong links. I say that because of the following FIVE marriages:- John OATS married Joanna COWLIN 1796 Perranzabuloe John OATS married Johanna LAWRY 1813 St Just in Penwith John OATS married Johanna WOOLCOCK 1817 St Just in Penwith John Semmens OATS married Johanna JENNINS 1817 Ludgvan John OATES married Johannah MAYNE 1829 Helston Your post indicates that you are probably looking at the 1817 marriage at Ludgvan but then you have St Just involved and you must remember that the second forename was not always recorded. And Semmens (var.) is not the least common name in West Penwith either! I will do a little work based on John being son of Martin Oats and Elizabeth Semmens and then look at things again once you have supplied some additional information. CT

Hey Cornish Terrier, thank you this site is brilliant. Out of the 5 marriages my direct decendants are John Semmens OATS married Johanna JENNINS 1817 Ludgvan. In my travels on ancestory.com there seems to be another wife for Martin Oats, Dorothy Grenfell (1764-1832) this marriage seems to be after his one to Elizabeth. John s Oats born (1796) and another 2 or 3 sons born to Dorothy born between (1805-1808) Martin and Richard. The marriage to to Dorothy was in cornwall and the marriage to elizabeth was in luudgvan. Thank you

Hi Debbie - I have been working on this but could still do with a bit of information about the arrival in Australia. So if you can tell me when and where they arrived and which children came with John and Johanna that would be helpful. Roy - yes, it may save some digging but then if I don't dig I might miss out on finding something that could be useful elsewhere! Amazing what turns up sometimes when you start looking at something that you might otherwise have not bothered. CT

The perils of Ancestry!!!!!! - Don't believe it!
That marriage occurred at St Just in Penwith and Martin was recorded as a bachelor.
It does look like Martin probably married for a second time to Ann Trevascus at Ludgvan on January 8th 1803. There is no information in this record about the marital status of either but that was not unusual for Ludgvan and a few other Parishes at times.
There is a burial at Ludgvan for an Elizabeth Oats age 40 on 20th August 1801 which I suspect was Martin's first wife. If it is her then she was baptised to John Symons at Ludgvan 8th December 1761. A witness to the marriage in 1803 was Edmund Semmens whom I suspect may have been a brother to Elizabeth. He was probably baptised at Ludgvan 19th September 1756 to John Semmens.

Richard Oats b 1826 Francis M Oats b 1865 Malcolm C Oats b Lionel C Oats b 1920 Robert Oats b 1948 Me I'm really interested in collecting documentation for my next study journey somewhere with Malcolm or Francis they moved to Neville Nsw

CT I have John Semmens (Symons, on the transcription)Oats bapt. at St.Austell (?) 3 apr.1796 also a brother, Martin 26dec 1795.Both toMartin and Elizabeth. I realise it is a way from Landsend, but Martin Snr. was a Mariner. Also a Martin buried at St.Austell 18 july 1796. Of course I may be well off track here, but it looks reasonable. RW

Hi Roy - yes, that is my conclusion also. I checked for other marriages for Martin Oats and Elizabeth but found none and then the name John Symons Oats was a bit of a giveaway.
Martin appears to have been baptised at Ludgvan in 1761 son of Richard Oates and I have siblings at Ludgvan from 1751 to 1763. At the moment It looks likely that Richard was a son to Martin Oats and Jane James and baptised at Ludgvan 1st August 1725 by which time his mother had been widowed for about four months.
What I have not yet found is a likely marriage for Richard whose wife I suspect might have been the Joan Oats buried at Ludgvan in 1797 age 70.

Hi Debbie, Based on your information, you and I are 4th cousins once removed. John Symons (Semmens) Oats was my 3rd GR Grandfather. Note John his wife Johanna and their children Johanna, Henry (my 2nd GR Grandfather) and Frances arrived at Port Adelaide South Australia on the 20 May 1851 aboard the Wanderer. Your 3rd GR Grandfather Richard Oats (son of John Symons Oats) and his wife Harriet Cock arrived at Port Adelaide South Australia on the 5 Dec 1848 aboard the Baboo. An interesting fact is my 2nd GR Grandfather Henry Oats married Harriet Cock's sister Catherine Cock on the 29 Nov 1855 at Kangaroo Flat, Sandhurst, Victoria, Australia. I had exchanged information with your Father's sister Pamela around 8 years ago. I provided a fair amount of information on our Oats/Oates family to a Paul Anderson who has since posted most of it on the Hunt/Boss/Brown/Oats family tree located at www.ancestry.com.auMore than happy to share some of the birth, death and marriage certificates I have collected along the way. Cheers, Rick Oates
