May I ask what St. Piran's day is all about.
It's Okay ... I'm from Australia.

St Piran's day, celebrates the patron saint of Cornwall.
Legend has it that when he came to Cornwall, he brought with him a bottle of Irish whiskey, and finished it off one night with a hermit friend. The next day, he lit a fire to demonstrate the art of distilling. This was done on a bed of black stones and, when they heated up, a silver liquid ran out - more precious than even whiskey.
St Piran had launched the Cornish tin-mining industry!

Hello Roy,
St. Piran is the Patron Saint of Cornwall who is said to have brought Celtic Christianity to Cornwall. He is also the Patron Saint of tinners. According to legend, St. Piran arrived in Cornwall floating on a millstone from Ireland. He has been associated with St. Ciaran of Saighir. St. Piran's Oratory can be found in the sand dunes near Perranporth and St. Piran's Well is at Tintagel. Throughout Cornwall St. Piran's Day is celebrated on 5 March each year with processions, music, dancing, etc. The black and white Cornish flag is known as St. Piran's flag. Place names in Cornwall such as Perranporth, Perranzabuloe, Perranuthnoe, Perranarworthal are named in honour of our Patron Saint.
Regards,
Mary

Thank you Londoner and Mary. I have never come across this St Piran before and find your replies very interesting. It's great how you pick up things like this on sites like PG. It's a real history lesson about Cornwall and gives people like me a better understanding of where my blood lines come from. I also wondered about the Flag ... now I know. Happy ST. PIRANS DAY to all. Roy ... from down under.
