I've been looking at some online old national newspapers UK, and came across an article on a 5 January 1904 Hayle dynamite works accident; 4 deaths including Andrew Curnow of Connor Downs Hayle, age 25 (sic), married, 2 children. I think in fact this must be the burial 9 Jan 1904 Gwithian of Andrew Bowden Curnow age 53 per OPC..... Should I know who he is? Or rather, I see he is born Camborne son of John Curnow~Grace Sincock; John Curnow at their 1842 marriage named his father as Andrew, mine agent. Should I know who this John Curnow is? I have no John Curnow born c1820 Crowan/Redruth/Gwinear with a father Andrew mine agent. But it seems I should have....... The closest I can see is the chap baptised Bath, Somerset 1821 to Andrew & Jane, that I think may be Andrew Curnow 1781 on his 2nd marriage. But their son John doesn't seem a good fit..... Is this John Curnow who married Grace Sincock a line from way out left that I can't see on FS? Or is the name of the father as “Andrew” in error? Although a son is named Andrew..... so that's not likely??? Maybe John Curnow wasn't born John Curnow & was illegitimate..... Maybe I shouldn't have looked at this one.....! Sue

Looking at the Census records I would suggest John Curnow's father was either a very busy commercial traveller or 'on the run'! Birthplace recorded as follows:- 1851 - Crowan 1861 - Camborne 1871 - Redruth 1881 - Gwinear 1891 - Camborne? - possibly remarried to Martha Either way John seems to have grown up a very confused lad! And if that is the case then perhaps his father was not Andrew. I will have a look at everyting I can find to see if I can identify him for you. CT

I was right about one thing! - John Curnow was widowed in 1884 and married Martha Quintrall (widow, nee Rickrard) in 1885. But after that things went downhill in a big hurry! If John was the son of an Andrew Curnow then I don't think it was the one in Bath. For one thing he was a tailor! The only other possibility I think would be the son of John Curnow and Mary Renoden (bp. 1780 Towednack) for whom I have no further information at the moment. Although not registered with a second Christian name John Curnow's son was buried as Andrew 'Bowden' Curnow. Could John Curnow have been the son of a Curnow girl with Andrew Bowden being the father perhaps? (Maybe not - looks like that name did not come into the Bowden family until quite late.) For the moment at least - I am stuck! CT

There is Andrew Curnow January 1780 no further info found, yes.....
I believe he died young despite no burial yet found. More on that another time.
I think I need to pursue some illegitimacy possibilities for John Curnow c1820 born-he-ain't-quite-sure-where to we don't really know who...... Might take a few years to resolve! ;D

Well look at that! Might be way off beam but.... Just did a search of 1841 for Andrew X any age, resident Cornwall, occupation mine agent...... and it found only 2: Andrew Vivian age 30 - too young to be John Curnow's father Andrew Bawden........ 45. Married prob Jun 1820 to Mary Michell & living in Redruth. Just a possibility for having begotten a child with an unmarried as yet unknown Curnow girl....... Sue

Timing would be about right but I can find just six children baptised at Redruth from 1820 to 1832 and not a John among 'em. Also no evidence of an illegitimate child to a Curnow or anyone else that might fit the scenario let alone with any reference to an Andrew Bawden/Bowden. (At least there ain't one using the 'quick and easy' search tools!) But if the name Bowden/Bawden has any significance then this fella would be a primae candidate to be involved I would have thought. Mmmm, no obvious trace of John being baptized, to anyone....... I can't see said John Curnow in the 1841 census either, unless he is lodging in Crowan with the Rules which wouldn't help anyway - & besides, I had pencilled that census record in to be John Curnow 1817 son of James Curnow~Dorothy Bolitho, who married Alice Floyd Crowan 1844. My only thought is that mother might be a Catherine Curnow (John & Grace had a daughter named Catherine) – not the one baptized 1808 & has illegitimate Wilmot 1835 Towednack & I think illegitimate William Inch Curnow 1838 Ludgvan, but maybe the one appearing in court 1811 National Archives: Ann Curnow, Mary Curnow, Catherine Curnow and Elizabeth Curnow committed to Bridewell for keeping "house of ill-fame" in RedruthI know not who they were........ Probably need to leave it for now.... Sue

They were "discharged" I believe, so not so bad! Anyway, now & then I've searched high & low for clues re this fellow John Curnow who was unsure where he was born but said at his marriage to Grace Sincock 1842 that his father was Andrew a mine agent. Although later than his declared age in censuses of early 1820s birth, last seen dying Redruth RD Sep Q 1898 age 75, I've found a baptism Crowan of a John Curnow to unmarried Elizabeth Curnow 3 March 1827. No idea who she was! Curnows don't really "do" Crowan a lot..... Looking again at 1841, I think it is possible this chap could be a servant, "15", at Bosvenning Gulval to farmer John Uren. I just thought I'd note that here, for when future enlightenment strikes! ;D Sue

The following may or may not be of some use but it is the only Curnow marriage at Crowan up to 1837:- Bennett Treloar, bachelor and Jane Curnow, spinster, both of Crowan married 25th April 1836 by Banns (Wit: Bennet Treloar, Elizth Watters) It is possible she may have a connection with your 'loose' Elizabeth Curnow. Loose?! Thanks. I see Ben. & Jane Treloar are at Barripper Camborne (like a few other people!) 1851/1861, where John Curnow/Grace end up at some point, so I'll check things out....... Jane born apparently Gwinear c1815... Surprise, can't yet see her baptism either! Sue

And it is not a case of having been missed or not yet transcribed either! I have checked gwinear and surrounding Parishes including Crowan and have not been able to find her. CT

An Andrew Curnow question, although not I think the phantom Andrew Curnow supposedly a father to the John Curnow who married Grace Sincock that I was looking at here......
Does anyone have access to an old CFHS Journal article, 1997 I think, 14, "Strays reconnected'??
That article I understand was (at least in part) about the Andrew Curnow who married Joan Browning Somerset 1817 then had many children/descendants in the Bath/Bristol area.
I am interested to know if there are any snippets in the article that I haven't come across, that might be of interest in my Andrew Curnow delvings...........

I was about to suggest you contact Bill Curnow but then I remembered that I had been a member of the CFHS for a few years around that time. It just so happens that I have all Journals for the year you want and the article should be with you now. BTW - the article was actually written and submitted by Bill Curnow. CT
