Hello, I'm new at this and would like some help with my Greatx3 Grandfather John Walters born about 1803 Cornwall, died 1869 Auckland, New Zealand. I have his death certificate - but there is very little detail on it ie; aged 66 years- no date of birth and born in Cornwall. We have always been told the family was from Truro - but John Walters was in Bodmin in the 1841 census - with wife Emma (nee Richards of Kenwyn) and children Eliza 14yrs, William 12yrs and John 10mths and a James Roberts 15yrs whose relationship is not recorded. The research I have done so far leaves me with 2 alternatives for John's origins - born in Crowan to William Walters and Elizabeth Johns or born in St Agnes to Edward Walters and Elizabeth ? I favour the Crowan option because of the names in the family...however, I have no proof....and there was also a Vincent Walters born 1813 St Hilary Cornwall, in Waiuku, South Auckland, New Zealand, whose family spent time with mine back in the 1800s. John was a copper miner. He arrived in New Zealand in 1846 with the Ninnis and Rowe families (and son William Walters) to help manage (as surface captain) a new mine on Kawau Island. Any help would be most appreciated Regards, Christine

Hej Christine, I have my family tree at home and it starts (if I remember correctly)with a John Walters (or Waters)of Crowan around 1670. Later there are more Johns and also a William married to a Elisabeth, I think. I know there is a Vincent. I will look at it tonight and se if I can help you. My Mother is Ella Lorraine Walters and was born in NZ. Perhaps I´m wrong and there is no connection (after all Walters is a popular name)but if so - no harm done. I´ll get back to you Kind regards, Yasmin van der Maal

Hi Christine I was browsing and found your query. I would be very interested to find out more as I think we have the same ancestor. I have a letter from my great great grandfather Josephiah Wedgwood Boon born Auckland NZ 8 October 1845. It sounds like you may have already come across this information. Quoting from the letter, he"was married to Elizabeth Jane Walters, youngest daughter of John and Emma Walters of Kingsland, Auckland in the Whau Road Methodist Chapel on 24th April 1866 by Rev. John Warren. Elizabeth, my wife, was born in Cornwall, England, on 23rd June 1845 and arrived in New Zealand with her parents about the year 1848. Her father, John Walters, was a miner and came to NZ as Surface Captain under engagement with an English company to work the copper mines at Kawau Island in the Hauraki Gulf, Auckland NZ." I know there are other relatives who have delved into our ancestry - perhaps I can find out more. Kind regards Jono Clark

Hello Christine and Howard
I have just joined the site as I am searching for information about the Walters family from Crowan, Cornwall who ended up in NZ via Australia. I am an Australian descendant of Vincent Walters and Ann Sanday so it appears that we may be related. My paternal grandfather came to Australia from NZ around 1912-14. I never met him as my grandparents separated when my father was a child.
I would be most interested in any information you may have about the family.
Regards Ian Walters
