I've been aware for a while of an online extract from a Scottish newspaper, Dundee Courier & Argus, 9 April 1898 about mining veterans in the area, and prizes awarded 1898 for astoundingly long service. www.scottishmining.co.uk/440.htmlA Robert Curnow (no prize! ) gets a mention: Robert Curnow, Lambie's Buildings, Drygate Street, Larkhall, age 74, employed 64 years. Now, who is he? Looking at my records, I have Robert 1823 youngest son of my William Curnow & Elizabeth Bolitho, who I haven't pursued post 1861, when he is at Amalwhidden Towednack with wife cousin Margery of the 1843 St Ives marriage, & children Elizabeth Bolitho 16 & James 13. Ah-ha! This is sounding promising: the blue coloured website has recently been adding Scotland for earlier years, & in their index for 1871 has Robert & Margaret Curnow both born c1823, resident somewhere in the Hamilton RD in Lanarkshire..... I'm thinking I could be getting warm.....?? Hmm... or maybe not, looking at the A* index for 1871, which has other Lanarkshire Curnows viz James c1848 (he would do nicely , John c1845 - should this be a lady? -, Catherine c1867....... And then in 1901 apparently a Jeannie born c1817 instead of Margaret as wife to Robert.... Sue

The GRO for Scotland has not given permission for the display of images but Ancestry at least has some transcriptions of the data. In 1871 Robert Curnow was age 48 and born 'England'. He was a coal miner at the Allanton Colliery at Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Wife Margaret was also age 48 and also born 'England'. And then there was son James age 23 and born 'England' who was also a coal miner at the Allanton Colliery. Not a lot of help but it may at least be of some use. In 1881 Robert and Margaret are at 5 Dykehead, Hamilton, Lanarkshire. Robert's age could not be deciphered except apparently that it was ?9 but Margaret was age 58. This time however we get a birthplace of Cornwall, England which makes them even more promising. I can't find him in 1891 but!!! 1901 Census Drygate St, Larkhall, Dalserf, Lanarkshire Robert Curnow age 78 born LUDGOAN, Cornwall Jeanie do., age 84 born Culross, Perthshire Is that a little more help? Well, it sounds jolly excellent to me, as I don't think I can see other Robert Curnow~Marge with son James of the right ages, from the Ludgvan area - why not Towednack?? - other than the children of the Bolitho girls, to fit this Scottish bill. I am definitely liking it. I shall have to follow up on son James in due course, & also track down his sister... Another lot of, THANKS! Sue

James was baptised at Ludgvan in 1850 although I have not actually recorded it yet. I did see it when I was having a quick look around for possibilities. It is always possible he was actually born in Ludgvan but baptised at Towednack. If they lived at or near Amalebrea then you could nearly guarantee it in some cases. CT
