An interesting problem that I have been working on for the last couple of nights that might amuse and confuse! ;D
I must warn you that I don’t think there is any way I can describe these events without almost certainly confusing you!
This started with the baptism the following baptism at St Erth:-
Matthew son of Matthew and Emma Berryman bp. 24th February 1876 (born 1st April 1870)
That is all well and good and there is no problem with waiting five or six years to baptize a child but ……………….
Matthew BERRYMAN and Emma EDYVEAN were not married until the September Qtr of 1873. But there’s more!
1871 Census
No 14 Trebartha Place, St Erth
Emma EDYVEAN, head, WIDOW, 35, St Erth
Sarah Louisa do., daur, 9, scholar, St Erth
Annie Jane do., daur, 2, St Erth
Matthew do., son, 11mths, St Erth
Matthew BERRYMAN, Boarder, MARRIED, 35, miner, Ludgvan
And that is the easy part of the story!!!!!!
I only have transcriptions of the St Erth Baptisms at the moment so I need to try and get a look at the registers to fully understand some of the events recorded but for now I will try to describe the events as I have them.
Emma EDYVEAN was born Emma MAY and in 1851 she was age 15 and living at home with her parents and siblings at St Erth. Just a couple of years later it appears the wheels began to fall off!
The transcript of St Erth Baptisms (also on OPC) shows three events in 1861:-
1st November 1861 baptised
Thomas MAY born 17th October 1853
Elizabeth Ann MAY born 7th May 1857
Sarah Louisa MAY born 3rd August 1861
The parents are attributed as Thomas and Emma MAY and it is this point that I need to query by access to the original PRs.
Perhaps this might be a good place to show the family in the 1861 Census and you might then get some idea of the confusion.
1861 Census
Little Mill, St Erth
Robert MAY, head, mar, 48, carter, Falmouth
Elizabeth do., wife, mar, 54, St Erth
Emma EDYVEAN, daur, Wid., 26, St Erth
Louisa MAY, daur, unm, 15, mine girl, St Erth
Lidya do., daur, unm, 13, to mine, St Erth
Thomas do., Grand Son, 7, scholar, St Erth
Eizabeth Ann do., Grand Daur, 4, St ErthJohn STEVENS, boarder, unm, 21, Ag Lab, St Ives
And now comes the tricky bit! Notice the dates of birth for, in particular, the first two May children above and then note that in 1861 Emma had been married and was now widowed.

Edyvean John Penzance 5c 582
May Emma Penzance 5c 582
So, Emma has a child (presumably by Thomas May) in 1853 and then in 1854 she marries John Edyvean who I think I have now identified as the son of John and Alice (nee Pickens) Edyvean from St Hilary.
It would then seem that by 1857 John has died and Emma has resumed relations with Thomas May!
I have not yet been able to find out what happened to John Edyvean but he did leave a son:-
John son of John and Emma Edyvean of Relubbus was baptised at St Hilary 24th April 1863 but had been born at St Hilary 6th March 1855.
In 1861 John Edyvean age 5 was with his widowed Grandmother at St Hilary but the following from the 1871 Census might show that the date of the above baptism was significant:-
1871 Census
Boskennal, Ludgvan
Michael TAYLOR, head mar, 53, farmer of 101 acres, Ludgvan
Elizabeth do., wife, mar, 56, farmer’s wife, Maylor
Elizabeth A GROSE, daur, mar, 28, daughter, Ludgvan
Emily MARTIN, daur, mar, 24, daughter, Ludgvan
Mary ORWELL, daur, mar, 24, daughter, Ludgvan
Eliza TAYLOR, daur, unm, 21, daughter, Stagne (St Agnes?)
Lociana do., daur, unm, 15, daughter, Phillack
John EDYVEAN, Adopted Son, 15, farm labourer, St Hilary
Emma GROSE, Grand daur, 8, daughter E A Grose, Redruth
Ann ORWELL, Grand do., 4, daughter of Mary Orwell, Redruth
Henry H C PHILLIPS, cousin, unm, 53, Gentleman, Ludgvan
John M MARTIN, Grandson, 1m, Ludgvan
Robert MAY, Bro Law, mar, 59, farm labourer, Mylor
Mary THOMAS, servant, unm, 33, Farm Servant indoor, St Just
Elizabeth A EDYVEAN, servant, unm, 13, Farm Servant indoor, St Hilary
Sometime between 1861 and 1871 John Edyvean has become the ‘adopted son’ of Michael Curnow Taylor which is why I think there may be some significance in the 1863 baptism.
Note also that the second servant is Elizabeth A Edyvean age 13. I would suggest this is the daughter of Emma baptised as Elizabeth Ann MAY in 1861.
Also note that the wife of Michael Taylor was the sister of Robert May and, therefore, aunt to Emma Edyvean.
In order to maintain the timeline I think it time to re-introduce Emma Edyvean in the 1871 Census and also to note the two additional members of her family:-
1871 Census

Matthew do., son, 11mths, St Erth
Matthew BERRYMAN, Boarder, MARRIED, 35, miner, Ludgvan
Annie Jane daughter of Emma Edyvean of St Erth baptised 13th January 1871 (born 11th August 1868)
The birth of son Matthew was registered in the June Qtr 1870 as Matthew EDDYVEAN but the baptism did not occur until later.

Berryman Matthew Penzance 5c 432
EDDYVEAN Emma Penzance 5c 432
Matthew son of Matthew and Emma Edyvean of St Erth baptised 24th February 1876 St Erth (born 1st April 1870)
(I have also just found a birth registered in 1868 for a Mary Berryman Eddyvean)
There are two further baptisms of interest but once again, until I can get to see the entries in the original registers I am not sure exactly how they are displayed. Strangely these two are also in 1876.
Thomas James BERRYMAN or MAY son of Emma of St Erth baptised 12th May 1876 at St Erth (born 4th June 1872)
Laura BERRYMAN or MAY daughter of Emma of St Erth baptised 28th July 1876 at st Erth (born 7th July 1876)
And then:-
Matthew Berryman of St Erth age 42 buried 28th July 1877 St Erth
Emma is again a widow in 1881 but by this time seems to have been getting a little confused about her family.
1881 Census
1 Bridge End, St Erth
Emma BERRYMAN, head, wid., 47, Agricultural Labourer, St Erth
Matthew do., son, 10, tin miner, St Erth
Sarah L do., daur, 11, scholar, St Erth
Laura do., daur, 4, scholar, St Erth
Amelia THOMAS, boarder, unm, 30, tin miner, Lelant
And just to confuse things one more time there is the following burial entry:-
Matthew Berryman of St Erth age 5 buried 23rd March 1878 at St Erth
This is not the son of Matthew and Emma as he appears alive and well in 1881!
So now I need to try and piece this all together and work out exactly which Matthew Berryman is involved. I also have to find out what happened to his previous wife!
