Dear List,
Thomas Shugg and Eliza Maria Paull, were married on 17 Aug 1845, in Phillack. Thomas Shugg was aged 22 at the time of his marriage, a bachelor, mariner, a resident of Copperhouse, and his father was noted as Thomas Shugg also a mariner. Eliza Maria Paull was aged 24, a spinster from Falmouth, daughter of Thomas Paull, a mariner (source: OPC Marriages).
I'm unable to find baptisms for Thomas Shugg, or Eliza Maria Paull. Would anyone be able to help me with these folk? The closest Thomas Shugg baptism is in St Ives, in 1818 to Thomas and Blanch Shugg, however this is confirmed as a different child, and family.
The only baptism similar, for Eliza was: Eliza Mary Paul, bapt. 30 Nov 1825, St Gluvias to parents Robert Richard and Mary Ann Paul (source: IGI extracted parish rec). But, as you can see the father is quite different. Eliza appears in the 1851-1891 Census, consistently living in Phillack. From the 1871 Census she is a widow. She died aged 80 in the Sep Qtr 1902 Redruth RD. Phillack parish records note her burial on 20 Aug 1902 (residence Penpol Terrace, Phillack).
The couple had one surviving child, Eliza born Dec Qtr 1850, who married an Edwin Jenkins in 1876. They seem to disappear in the Census records, so may have emigrated.
Thomas Shugg doesn't seem to appear in any Census records, but his wife was consistently recorded as a Mariner's wife. He was noted in the West Briton & Cornwall Advertiser on 29 Oct 1852: Births. At Hayle, on Sunday last, the wife of Captain THOMAS SHUGG, of the "Eaglette," a daughter since dead.
Any help with this would be appreciated. I've wondered whether there could be a transcription error with the parents of both Eliza Maria and Thomas, on their marriage record.
Cheers, Rowena

Rowena - Thomas Shugg might take me a little searching but I can help with Eliza. Eliza Maria PAUL d/o Thomas (mariner) and Susanna was baptised 13th March 1823 at Falmouth (born 4th November 1821) (Falmouth Baptisms 1776-1837) Thomas PAUL married Susanna LIGHTFOOT 14th May 1811 at Falmouth (Devon and Cornwall Record Society Transcription) I will see what I can find for Thomas Shugg. In 1851 Eliza was living at Bodriggy, Phillack (sailor's wife) and by then had a daughter, Eliza, age 4 months. With them was a visitor Mary Ann Secombe age 11, born Phillack. In 1861 Eliza and her daughter were living at St Johns Street, Phillack and stated she was a 'Ship Master's wife' By 1871 Eliza is a widow living at 45 Penpoll Terrace, Phillack along with her unmarried daughter and two lodgers. So Thomas is conveniently away at the time of each Census and died sometime between 1861 and 1871. I have not been able to find a baptism for Thomas as yet but a possible family might be that of Thomas Shugg and Joan Rowe who married at Sithney in 1815. There is a large gap between a baptism in 1821 and then daughter Emily at Helston in 1830 so they must be considered. CT

Rowena - looks like I have done it again! I did not read your complete message before going off in search of answers to each of the points you made. But at least I think I have confirmed what you already stated. I was thinking about the problem of there being only one child with Eliza saying she was still married right up until 1871. But I then began to wonder why there would be only one child in all that time given that Thomas would surely have been expected to be home at some time. Then I read your note again and noticed the reference to the child in 1852. Since then I have 'googled' for Captain Thomas Shugg and the first thing that came up is interesting:- West Briton - Friday 29th November 1850 "At Hayle .................... and on Sunday last, the wife of Capt. Thomas Shugg, of the "Eaglet", a son." Given daughter Eliza was aged 4 months at the 1851 Census I think it fair to say that there might be an error in the West Briton! Then there is this Death Notice from the West Briton of 28th July 1843:- SHUGG - At Hayle Copperhouse, on Wednesday last, Capt. Benjamin Shugg, age 37 years. The deceased had only reached home on Monday, from Leghorn whither he had gone for the benefit of his health. Benjamin son of Thomas and Anne Shugg bp. 13th April 1806 Gwinear Might this be another link? West Briton Death Notice 13th August 1847 SHUGG - At Bodriggy, Hayle, on the 3rd instant, the infant son of Mr. Thomas Shugg; That is getting a little closer to home I reckon! Yes, I think this might be Thomas and Eliza so we do know that he had a son ..... albeit briefly. There was also a death for Thomas Shugg age 2 son of Thomas Shugg of Fraddon, Hayle in 1842. Thomas son of Thomas (mariner) and Eliza Maria Shugg of Bodriggy baptised 1st August 1847 at Phillack. Thomas Paul Shugg of Bodriggy age 2 mths buried 8th August 1847 Phillack That takes care of the son but I have not been able to find baptisms for Eliza or the other daughter. A little more for you to work with anyway. CT

Hi CT
Firstly, the family of Thomas Shugg and Eliza Maria Paull, as I have them, are listed below. I've not found any baptisms in Phillack, and have emailed the Hayle OPC: (1) Thomas Paull Shugg [/b]- FreeBMD birth Apr-Jun 1847, Redruth RD, and bapt. 1 Aug 1847, Bodriggy, Phillack, and died at 2 months and buried on 8 Aug 1847, Phillack.
(2) Eliza Shugg - FreeBMD birth Oct-Dec 1850 Redruth RD, no bapt found Phillack registers. Married Edward Jenkins, a mariner age 30 (father Ebenezer Jenkins, engineer) on 6 July 1876, in Phillack, and they moved to Wales, where they had at least 2 sons.
(3) Louisa Shugg - FreeBMD Birth Oct-Dec 1852 Redruth RD, and Death Oct-Dec 1852 Redruth RD. I think this is the baby daughter noted in the West Briton Births. She is also the only female Shugg birth to be registered in 1852 in Redruth RD.
Now to Thomas Shugg's parentage. His marriage record states his father was Thomas, also a mariner. I think your instincts are on track. Good pickup on Benjamin Shugg, also a mariner. Benjamin's parents were Thomas Shugg and Anne Bawden, married 7 May 1791, Gwinear. Their children were: 1. Martha, bapt 8 Apr 1792, Gwinear, and died 28 Aug 1792, Gwinear. 2. Richard, bapt. 4 dec 1793 Gwinear 3. Thomas, bapt. 10 July 1796, Gwinear 4. John, bapt 1 Jan 1799, Gwinear. Possible death at age 70, 1868 in St Erth. 5. Nanny Ann, bapt 11 Oct 1801, Gwinear. had 2 illegimate daughters Emma bpt. 19 Feb 1832, Gwinear, and Martha bpt. 17 Jun 1833, St Erth. 6. Benjamin, bapt 13 Apr 1806, Gwinear, and died 1843.
I'm thinking that if Benjamin was a mariner, it's also likely that another brother was a mariner. Brother Thomas b.1796, is a reasonable contender to have had a son at around age 27, circa 1822. As a mariner, he may well have married someone outside of Cornwall, or in the Scilly Isles. An open search on the IGI results in a marriage in the right time frame, and I think this is the answer.
Thomas Shugg married Elizabeth Morris on 9 may 1822, at St Mary Chruch, Swansea, Wales. A possible daughter, Eliza Jane Shugg married in Swansea, Mar Qtr 1874.
I'm having trouble with Census records for them, however.
The Wales connection is interesting, and ties in with Eliza Shugg and Edwin Jenkins moving to Wales.
Cheers, Rowena

Rowena - those baptism and burial dates I quoted came from transcripts of the Phillack registers. They were done by the OPC and can be found at this link:- freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~phillack/Just scroll down to 'Churches and Church Registers' and then 'Phillack Parish Church' where you will find the second 'click here' link takes you to the transcriptions. They are presented in batches of years and can be copied to your hard drive if you wish. I didn't think of looking outside Cornwall at the time for a possible marriage but given Thomas was a mariner it makes perfect sense. And Wales being one of those areas frequented by Cornish vessels it is a logical place to have found him. I also had not got to the stage of thinking to look outside England in the Census records! However I decided to take a look at the 1851 Census just now and, if you did not already have them, I reckon I have found more descendants of Thomas Shugg and Ann Bawden. At Llangefelach in 1851 we have:- William SHUGG, head , 35, coal miner, Gwinear Elizabeth do., wife, 30, Gwinear Elizabeth do., daur, 8, Llangefelach Margaret do., daur, 3, Llangefelach MARTIN BOWDEN SHUGG, son, 1, Llangefelach BINGO! - I think I have just found Thomas Shugg in the 1861 Census. Vessel - "Cornwall" Town - Penarth Harbour, Glamorgan Thomas Shugg, Married, age 38, Master, born Swansea, Glamorgan Just about a perfect match I should think. Except we have not yet found his parents. I will send copies of this via email and meantime will see if I can find any more of them for you. CT

Rowena - the Eliza Jane who married in 1874 might be the daughter of William and Elizabeth I think. She does not appear in the 1851 Census with the family but I think you will find her there in the 1861 Census I have sent. And what I have sent via email is all the Shuggs appearing in the Index for Wales for those particular Census years. Unless indexed an an extraordinary manner (not unusual! ) then it appears none of the Shugg family were in Wales in 1841. CT

Hi CT,
Apologies, I've been slow to reply, I started tracing what happened to the widow of Thomas Shugg, Elizabeth (Morris), her 2nd marriage in Wales and her origins - sidetracked!
There were 2 Shugg families that went to Wales, and although related, it was back a bit, through the Shuggs' of Gwinear. The William Shugg and Eliza Bowden family had, I think, 10 children, all born Swansea between 1844-1862, one of whom the 2 surviving sons: Martin Bowden Shugg emigrated to the USA, marrying in Pennsylvania, and living in Ohio; and William Edward Shugg married (1) Margaret Bowden 18 Sep 1895, Penzance (died 6 Oct 1930 Clarinda, Iowa, USA), and (2) Mazy Davidson in the USA, and he died 28 Oct 1946, California. The surviving daughters married in Swansea, and stayed in Wales.
William and Eliza married in 1842 in Swansea. Both Cornish.
Eliza Bowden was the daughter of Edward Bowden and Margaret Trewhella, bapt. 29 Apr 1821, Gwinear. She died on 31 Jul 1881, Plasmarl, Swansea, Glamorgan.
William Shugg was the son of Richard Shugg and Elizabeth Hambly, bapt. 13 Aug 1815, Gwinear. His father was a farmer on his children's baptism, and later noted as acopper minerHe was a miner and then worked in a Colliery in Morriston, Swansea. Noted a couple of time in The Cambrian Online News, as a native of Morriston (where there was a large Colliery). His brother Thomas Shugg married Mary Bowden, the sister of Eliza Bowden, in 1837 in Gwinear.
I'll separate these replies to help define the familes. Cheers, Rowena

Woops, editing errors in the previous post - apologies, it was a 5 am wakeup, and not much sleep. Will definitely proof this one.
Thomas Shugg family reply.
Thomas Shugg b.1823 Swansea, Wales, and Eliza Maria Paull's surviving child, Eliza Shugg married Edwin Jenkins, 30, bach. mariner of Foundry, father Ebenezer Jenkins, engineer. They married on 6 July 1876, Phillack. They moved to Glamorgan, Wales where they and their family were recorded in all the Census up to 1901. All children born in Wales. Edwin was a Steamship owner in the 1902 Census. he died in 1909, aged 64. His parents were Ebenezer Jenkins and Elizabeth Gudge, who married Dec Qtr 1843, Penzance RD. Unable to find a birth registration for him on FreeBMD, or a baptism. Different Census record him as being born in St Erth and Phillack.
Confirming the Eliza Jane born abt 1844 Swansea, was a daughter of William and Eliza Bowden, and she married Henry Taylor in 1874 in Swansea, and died there age 91 in 1935. Another sister Elizabeth b. Sep Q.1842 Swansea married a Daniell Mitchell, Mar Q 1870, Swansea. All of their other children were named Martin, William, mary or Margaret.
Cheers, Rowena
