Another mystery that may be solved!
The identity of this Matthew has bugged me for a long time there is little (or nothing) in the Sextons Records to give any clue.
However, it seemed there were few options with probably the most likely candidate being:-
Matthew s/o Thomas and Mary TREWHEELLOW bp. 7th July 1793 St Erth
The spelling of the surname was all over the place, especially prior to 1800, but the parents are Thomas TREWHELLA and Mary EDWARDS who married 27th December 176 at St Hilary.
Whilst search Immigration Records over the last few days I found something extremely interesting:-
New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957 New York Passenger Lists, 1820-1957
Name: Mathew Truwheiler
Arrival Date: 25 May 1835
Estimated Birth Year: abt 1796
Age: 39 Years 4 Months
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: London, England
Ship Name: Canadian Colonial Airways
Search Ship Database: Search the Canadian Colonial Airways in the 'Passenger Ships and Images' database
Port of Arrival: New York, New York
Line: 15
Microfilm Serial: M237
Microfilm Roll: M237_26
List Number: 298
Note the name of the Ship - "Canadian Colonial Airways"
- in 1835!!??
In fact the ship was simply named "Canada".
There is an obvious difference between the projected birth year (based on age as recorded on the ship manifest) and the baptism of Matthew in 1793.
However I now have little doubt that the mystery has been solved.
The details above are basically a precis of the original document so there are omissions.
Amongst those omissions is the fact that Mathew Truwheiler was a carpenter.
In his Will of 1813 Thomas TREWHELLA of St Erth makes mention of his son Matthew being apprenticed to one Richard GOODMAN.
A Richard GOODMAN, carpenter, married Margaret WEARNE at St Erth 4th November 1821
Richard is probably the same Richard Goodman baptised at St Erth in 1781 and I believe will be the same man mentioned in the Will of Thomas TREWHELLA.
Whether he married or not is yet another problem to be considered - however I believe I can now 'close the case' on the fate of 'the Mysterious Matthew TREWHEELER' who died in Adams County, Mississippi in 1843!
