Hi guys, hope you had a good Christmas and New Year! I would have posted earlier but I am having a hell of a time with computers!!! The computer I normally use won't let me log into to the forum, I log in and just get the log in page again!!!! I had to get rid of a stack of viruses and have tried everything re cookies, level of protection etc but to no avail.... So now I am using the "old" computer in the bedroom and it is working.... touch wood!!!! Any advice from the techies? I use avast anti-virus and spybot, shouldn't be a problem should it? Thanks!!!
As one brickwall falls another bugger puts one up!!!!!!!!!!!!
You say that you had to clear lots of viruses. Are you sure that you are clear of infections? My daughter's PC picked up a trojan that neither McAfee or Ad-Aware could deal with. In the end the only thing that could touch it was Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and then it took several tries. There's a free version available at www.download.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html.

I would agree with Donne there. Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware was the only programme that picked up and destroyed the virus on my computer. I had about 5 different well known protection packages, and none of them picked up this virus. If I hadn't been so convinced there was a virus, I would probably still be having problems today.
It doesn't cost anything, and it would be well worth a try
I've got so many brick walls I could build a Mansion!

This is not so much a technical problem as one of "database management". I use the Ancestry tree-construction facility to assemble/edit/add any data that comes my way, so it is a Tree "under construction" and a depository of "findings". There are over 5000 names on this database but almost 2000 are probably "duplicates", but they are not "clone" entries but entries that have been put there over a period of time and most are "different" in terms of detail eg conflicting DOBs, identity of spouse(s), location etc and may or may not be of the same person. I do not want to delete them. Some are "orphan" branches that I am trying to "connect" to the main Tree. Any suggestions as to how I can "merge" this data without losing any (until I decide to). There is a PAF facility (ie download the Ancestry Tree as a GEDCOM. Convert to PAF and use one of the provided "tools" in PAF....but it takes ages and is a manual exercise, one name at a time.) Ancestry does not have this merge facility as far as I know. David.
Is anybody else experiencing technical problems on this forum today?
I find that I am unable to begin a new thread. Also, I can't edit my post by altering font, colour, etc. as the whole tool bar is missing. When I try to go to certain forum pages, the Pro Boards message box appears: 'Oh no! Due to technical problems, we were unable to display this page . . . Error Code 1000'. The server status states that all is well and that there are no known issues! So I really have no idea what the problem is.
This is the first time ever that I have encountered this particular problem on Penwith Genealogy.
PS Just over one hour later at 09.30 and - hooray - the problem seems to have resolved itself! The tool bar for adding tags and the smilies are back and it does appear that I am able to post a new thread once again if I wish to do so! I still don't know why the gremlins got in earlier, but maybe they were doing some servicing work on ProBoards. ;D

Not too difficult really. I had to go searching for a little lesson on how to do it but still!
Just a couple of steps:-
1. The top toolbar on this page (just under 'Penwith Genealogy') contains a number of options. The second last option to the right is 'Profile' so click on that. 2. Once in your Profile page you will see three large grey buttons at the right and the first of these is 'Edit Profile'. Click on that one. 3. From the buttons on the toolbar select 'Settings'. 3. This page gives you a number of options and you will find the fourth one says 'Forum Theme' with an option to change it. 4. After making changes you will need to click on the button at bottom to save the changes.
There does seem to be a problem, at least with mine. I just walked through it so that I could explain it to you and I can see just two options - 'Default' or 'Green'. I am not sure why that is.
Antother thing you could do is to click on the 'Admin' button on the top toolbar on the home page. Follow the instructions there and you will find a description of how to go about making the changes.
The "Default" theme gives me a grayish-white background with black type. If you find the type is too small, change the zoom setting on your computer using your own internet browser program's "Tools." (With Internet Explorer, that's the gear icon top right on the toolbar.) I find changing the zoom level to 125 to 150% makes this very readable on a widescreen. You can choose to go with even larger type if you prefer.
