A little item for Newlyn.
Newlyn has advised me of another of her 'brick walls' so thought I would take a bit of a look at it and offer what I find for comment and, perhaps, some help and expansion.
I will start with the following marriage at Paul:-
4 Mar 1865 by Banns
James Wallish 28 Labourer of Mousehole [Mark] (Father: John Wallish, Labourer)
Elizabeth Jane Kevern 24 of Mousehole (Father: James Kevern, Gardener)
Witnesses: Thomas Eddy, Margaret Kevern
James WALLISH was baptised at Paul 8th October 1837 s/o John and Elizabeth
Here is the marriage of James' parents at Paul:-
5 Jun 1830 by Banns
John Wallis [Mark]
Elizabeth Trewren [Mark]
Witnesses: Pascoe Richards, Richard Pentreath
Elizabeth TREWREN has been Newlyn's problem - just who was she.
I have managed to find the following:-
1851 Census - St Buryan
Oakhill
John WALLISH, head, mar, 60, ag. lab., Paul
Elizabeth do., wife, mar, 43, St Just
James do., son, 13, Paul
Elizabeth do., daur, 6, Paul
Jane do., daur., 5, Paul
Byas do., son 3, St Buryan
From here I know that Elizabeth TREWREN was born at St Just about 1807/8.
A search of IGI produced only TWO baptisms at St Just for the name TREWREN:-
Elizabeth bp. 31st March 1808 d/o William and Jane
Phillis bp. 1st April 1810 d/o William and Jane
There are only FOUR marriages at St Just for this name of which only one can be the one we are after:-
William TREWREN m. Jane CLEMENS 4th October 1806 St Just **
Henry TREWREN m. Ann WHITE 16th September 1766
Thomas ELLIS m. Patience TREWREN 15th February 1812
Richard EDDY m. Jane TREWREN 29th July 1814
Interesting that IGI has no entry for PATIENCE Trewren. - a possible answer to that might be that she was a widow although there is no record of that in Phillimore.
However, the next problem is to try and identify William TREWREN given this is the line of interest for Newlyn.
There are 58 entries for this name in IGI with the usual duplicates and membe submitted entries.
Of these there appears to be only one that might be the correct one:-
William TREWREN bp. 19th June 1785 at Ludgvan s/o George and Catherine
Starting with the old favourite - naming patterns - it seems unusual that the only two (so far) known children are daughters and that neither was name Catherine.
So - do I have the right family?
Right now I can find no further evience of the family of William and Jane TREWREN anywhere West of the Hayle.
Anyone with anything at all to offer on this?
