Don't know if any of you know of the famous BenchEnd of Towednack Church. This old Pew was made at the very latest in 1633 and had pride of place in Towednack Church. I have seen photos of and have even taken photos of it myself when was at the Church in 1994. A few years ago I was informed that this 'Icon' of Towednack had gone missing, presumed stolen and there were no clues as to the perpetrators of this deed. For information - this had particular meaning for me because on each end of the Pew was carved a Portrait with the date 1633. On the one end was James TREWHELA and on the other Matthew TRENWITH who, I believe, were both Churchwardens at the time. I AM HAPPY TO ANNOUNCE THAT THIS ITEM HAS BEEN FOUND. I do not know the current location but I have been informed that it has been found in a Museum. My personal preference would be to have it returned to its rightful home - but I guess that may now be too much to ask in today's World. Let us hope that the same 'disappearing' fate does not befall the famous Mermaid Pew at Zennor Church which also has significance to my family and of which I also have photos which include me seated on it. These Churches are not quite the same without their celebrated icons. Cornish Terrier

That is wonderful news! I am happy to know that it is safe and its location is now known. The Matthew Trenwith of the bench end, incidentally, was either the husband or father-in-law of Jane Cock, daughter of Christopher Cock of Helston and St. Erth, and sister of the woman who married Christopher Trewhella....

- You have me here. I recall the Will which mentioned Trenwith children - in fact - 'grandson Matthew Trenwith'. From that Will written 1678 and proved 1679 we had two sons, Christopher and Thomas, and five daughters - Jane, Margery, Ann, Mary and the 'unknown' daughter who married Christopher Trewhella. We obviously do not yet know the name of the daughter who married Christopher Trewhella. Mary was named as executrix of her father's Will as 'daughter Mary Cock'. Ann married Robert Hampton. Margery married David Nennis. So the Nennis, Hampton and Trewheela grandchildren are taken care of, as are the Cock grandchildren. This brings us to JANE. It had been previously determined (in our discussions all those years ago) that the two MAY children mentioned in the Will belonged to JANE from a marriage to THOMAS MAY. In the Will she is named as daughter Jane KING. You are now saying that she was married to Matthew TRENWITH. Crikey Moses - now you really have me confused. BTW - if said Matthew Trenwith (of the Towednack Benchend) belongs here somewhere then he would have to be at least of old Christopher Cock's generation so it would be unlikely he would have been the husband.
