A little something to think about!
Another 'problem child' in the Quick family is Thomas QUICK of St Ives, cordwainer.
There are, at the moment, two of them!
1. Thomas QUICK, cordwainer married Elizabeth MAJOR 17th June 1769 at St Ives
2. Thomas QUICK, cordwainer married Jane MICHELL 12th May 1789 at Zennor
2. Thomas QUICK, wid., cordwainer married Joan WILLIAMS 11th June 1798 at St ives
The first of these (1.) was baptised 19th August 1739 at St Ives s/o Thomas and Jane (nee CANARTHEN) QUICK.
There have been no children found from this marriage.
------------------------------------------
So now let's see what we know about the second bloke.
Firstly, at the moment, I have no (recorded) idea of who he was.
There were no children from the marriage to Jane MICHELL and her burial could be one of at least two at St Ives where, unfortunately, the age of the deceased was not recorded.
From the marriage to Joan WILLIAMS there were five children:-
Elisa bp. 9th June 1799 St Ives
Philippa bp. 19th July 1801 and bu. 15th June 1802 St Ives
Philppa bp. 22nd May 1803 St Ives (married Jakeh GLASSON)
Anne bp. 15th April 1805 St Ives
Thomas bp. 25th January 1808 St Ives
Not really a lot to go on from that little lot.
The two wives:-
Jane MICHELL bp. 18th March 1765 at Zennor d/o Robert and Jane (nee QUICK) MICHELL
Joan WILLIAMS bp. 12th October 1766 at St Ives d/o Zachary and Ann (nee HAWKING) WILLIAMS
I now know that Joan was buried 3rd March 1857 at St Ives age 92 and that she was 'the first burial in the new ground'.
--------------------------------------------------
Joan QUICK was a widow at the time of the 1841 Census so, quite obviously, Thomas had died prior to that.
I have checked St Ives Burials from 1813 to 1837 and there is no possible candidate that could be this Thomas.
I have also checked FreeBMD for deaths of a Thomas QUICK from 1837 to December 1841 in the Penzance R.D.
There is only one and that was Thomas Williams QUICK in 1839.
It would appear then that Thomas must have died before 1813 but no earlier than 1808 when his last child was baptised.
-----------------------------------------------------
Between a couple of us I believe we now have a quite comprehensive record of the QUICK burials at St Ives.
AND NOW we come to the fun part - My thoughts on this dilemma! ;D
Our first Thomas QUICK was buried at St Ives 16th November 1767 - two years before his son, Thomas, married Elizabeth MAJOR.
This Thomas was also a cordwainer when he married Jane CANARTHEN at Lelant 10th June 1732.
From 1767 onwards there are only TWO other BURIALS for Thomas QUICK prior to 1813.
1. 5th January 1809 age 70
2. 7th October 1811 age 68
Looking at these in reverse order - Thomas of 1811 was married twice (Margaret BENNEY and Ann TONKIN) and his second wife was buried at St Ives 31st August 1807.
He can clearly have nothing to do with the problem - apart from the fact that he was a Customs House Officer when he died after having been a Miller.
AND THAT LEAVES US WITH .......
The Thomas who was buried in 1809 is interesting.
We know he was a cordwainer and we know there were no children from his marriage to Elizabeth MAJOR.
THE PUNCHLINE
I suspect that this fellow is the same one who later married Jane MICHELL and then Joan WILLIAMS!
He would have been 50 when he married Jane and then 59 when married Joan and commenced having children.
But that is not so unusual - I have seen it more than once.
And I can find only one other Thomas who 'might' possibly be this man but he was born at Ludgvan in 1743 which was only four years after 'my man' was born.
Your thoughts please!
