I also have a Charles (son of William and Elizabeth) who was baptisd 21st October 1821 at St Hilary. Very happy to be involved in this conversation and will help where I can and it will be interesting to see if William Woolcock has any connection to the Woolcock family who were subject of another thread some months ago. Peter Woolcock of St Ives traces back through Gulval but part of the family was in the St Hilary area for a time before either returning to Gulval or becoming involved at St Ives. If you could keep as much as possible of this happening here it might help - especially with others who may be interested in/connected to the same family. Should there be anything 'delicate' or something you think may become unnecessarily 'longwinded' then please do not hesitate to contact me via PM or email and I will see how I can help. Any little bits here may well lead to solving problems elsewhere.

Let me begin then with the people I'm closest to -- Stephen Woolcock and Honor Ralph. They were married 5 April 1834 at Crowan, both of the parish, married by banns, by John C Millett, official minister. The witnesses were Thomas Ralph (most likely the brother of Honor) and John Goldsworthy, who witnessed a lot of marriages at Crowan in those years. This is taken from the parish church records of Crowan as microfilmed by the Family History Library, film held at Salt Lake City.
The children I have from the marriage are: Caroline, bap 29 May 1836 William Henry, bap 18 Jan 1838 Stephen, bap 2 Jan 1840 Martha, bap 26 Jan 1842 John, bap 21 Oct 1844 Charles, bap 7 Apr 1846 James, bap 26 Dec 1853
So, I only have 7 and Susan says she has 8. Probably the 8th is between Charles and James, but I haven't looked closely at the baptismal records of Crowan yet. These are from the IGI, though I do have the film for the baptisms and can check. For the record, yes, Stephen and Honor were living at Noonvares, Crowan, as were at least a couple of his brothers and his parents at one point.
The initial question I had with this family was which Honor Ralph was his wife. But by process of elimination, it seems to be Honor the daughter of William Ralph and Elizabeth Barker, bap 1810 in St Erth. Census records appear to make her younger than that, but the 1815 Honor Ralph, daughter of John Ralph and Nancy Faull, died in 1818 at age 3. And the 1818 Honour Ralph, daughter of William Ralph and Mary Boaden, married George Tregembo in 1839 at Breage.

I was pretty sure that I had found the right family for my William Woolcock but now am uncertain. I have William Woolcock b 1806 in Crowan. He married Phyllis Tregoning in 1830 but is widowed in 1849. They have two children, Henry (b1835) and John (b1837). William then marries Eliza Blewett and have William (b 1857). This doesn't fit with the above post which gives Elizabeth James as his wife so now I'm searching again. Any help?? I need to find the parents of my William Woolcock b 1806??? Too many Williams! lol

Based on the information provided I have had a look at a few bits and pieces and the 1851 Census seems to point us in the right direction. First thing I noticed was that William Woolcock was born at Phillack and not Crowan. And although his age in 1851 is recorded as 45 I don't think it is quite correct. William s/o John and Mary Woolcock bp. 14th August 1803 at Phillack This looked the more likely family for your William until I checked my database to find that William died in 1828. Then the 1861 Census confuses things a little more as William's birthplace is now recorded as Redruth. So we are probably looking at:- William son of John and Jane Woolcock bp. 2nd December 1804 Redruth I will try and find a little more information and include it in another post. CT

After a little further investigation I am of the opinion that William was from Redruth.
There are some details I have not been able to locate as yet but I have pieced together an outline of what I think is your family.
John Woolcock married Jane Trescowrack 11th March 1798 at Redruth
John bp. 22nd July 1798 Redruth Ann bp. 26th March 1803 Redruth WILLIAM bp. 2nd December 1804 Redruth Thomas bp. 30th June 1806 Redruth Mary bp. 13th June 1811 Redruth Jane bp. 13th June 1811 Redruth Elizabeth bp. 3rd October 1813 Redruth Alice bp. 2nd March 1815 Redruth
William Woolcock married(1) Phillis Tregoning 19th June 1830 at Phillack
Henry bp. 31st August 1834 Redruth John bp. 4th June 1837 Phillack
Phillis Woolcock of Guilford age 52 buried 21st August 1849 at Phillack
William Woolcock married(2) Elizabeth Blewett June Qtr 1851 Redruth R.D.
William born c.1856 Phillack
1841 Census - Guilford, Phillack William Woolcock, 35, labourer Phillis do., 40 Henry do., 7 John do., 4
Living not far away and also at Guilford was the family of Gabriel and Elizabeth Blewett and I believe it is likely that William Woolcock's second wife was the daughter of this couple. (In fact William and his two sons were lodging with the Blewett family in 1851)
Elizabeth d/o Gabriel and Elizabeth Blewett bp. 18th January 1824 Gwinear
In 1861 William and Elizabeth, with son William, were living at Ventonleague, Phillack.
In this Census William's birthplace is recorded as Redruth.
William Woollcock of Ventonleague age 70 was buried 11th February 1874 at Phillack.

Thanks CT! This is such helpful information and also has unearthed twins! We have been looking for twins in our family as both my sister and I have them and didn't know which side they came from.
I want to continue my search for relatives further back but don't really know what sites to explore now that I am back to the early 1800s. Should I subscribe to something or can you recommend free sites that would help me delve further back? Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks Kathleen

Hi Kathleen - gald to be of help as always. But one word of caution regarding the 'twins'. Remember that these are Baptism dates and just because two children were baptised on the same day does not necessarily mean they were both born on the same day. Notice that the previous child in the family was baptised five years earlier so it is more likely that one of these children was born at least a couple of years prior to the baptism. To illustrate the point - when working through some Parish Register transcripts yesterday I came across about EIGHT children of the one family all baptised on the same day. Fairly obvious that they would not have been born on the same day. CT

CT,
Yes, I hadn't thought of that! Oops! I'll see what more I can find out if I ever find actual birth dates. So, any advice on where to turn next for good sites etc for early 1800s and 1700s?
Thanks Kathleen

www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,52054.0.html This site is excellent for transcripts of Cornwall PRs but unfortunately there is not much available for Redruth at the moment apart from IGI. The OPC site is highly recommended and there is more information being added there all the time. I am sure you are using it but just in case:- www.cornwall-opc.org/index.htmThis is the OPC Home Page and on the right side of the top Toolbar you will see 'Parish Index'. Click on this to see a list of Parishes where you will find more information about each along with the OPC for each with contact details. In the case of Redruth you may be able to ask the OPC to do some lookups for you. In my experience these people are extremely friendly and helpful so I certainly recommend them. CT

Hi, New to the site but here is what I have to offer. William Woolcock married Alice Bray, they had a son John who married Jane Trescowrack. Nicholas their son was born 14/2/1801 in Redruth, Cornwall. Nicholas married Mary Teague and they with their children migrated to South Australia and the Woolcock line continued to Isabella Edith Williams Woolcock my husband's grandmother. I am not 100% sure where the info for the Woolcock/Bray marriage came from - my mother -in -law passed it on to me. Cheers Traegs

Hi, Bit more to add. Nicholas was baptised in 1801, William Woolcock, 1741 - 1814 married Alice Bray born circa 1742. John Woolcock 1755 - 1816 married Jane Trescowrack ( Jane sometimes referred to as Jennifer) Their son Nicholas died 1866 in South Australia Cheers Traegs

Hello Traegs - welcome to Penwith Genealogy. I have had another look at this family based on your welcome input and I am inclined to think that your information is probably correct. There were two John Woolcocks baptised in the same year (1765) at Redruth with the earlier of the two being son of John and Amey. I had previously missed Nicholas as son of John and Jane because I did not search for children where the mother's name appeared as Jennifer. However now that I have him it has allowed me to think a little differently about the family. And it is Nicholas who appears to be the solution to which John is which. He was the second child of John and Jane so it might be expected that he was named for a paternal grandfather given the first child, John, was obviously named for his father. We have no Nicholas who could have been father to John and apparently there was no Nicholas Trescowrick so I looked for another connection. And the connection would appear to be Nicholas son of William and Alice who was baptised 4th June 1781 at Redruth. Based on this I would agree that John Woolcock was baptised 16th December 1775 at Redruth son of William and Alice. William Woolcock married Alice Bray 25th April 1763 at Redruth. CT
