In another thread there seemed to be a problem with multiple men named Robert QUICK being JOINERS/CARPENTERS by occupation and also being born about te same time.
Well what about multiple James QUICKs being MASONS!
1841 Census
Norway, St Ives
James QUICK, 90, Mason, In County
St Andrew St, St Ives
James QUICK, 55, Mason, In County
James do., 20, Mason, In County
Elizth do., 15, In County
Beach, St Ives
James QUICK, 55, Mason, In County
And then:-
James QUICK, mason, married Martha PEARCE 29th April 1781 at St Ives
James QUICK, mason, married Ann TONKYN 2nd January 1780 at St Ives
James QUICK, mason, married Eleanor HODGE 18th April 1802 at St Ives
As recently discussed in the Edward QUICK thread I am of the opinion that the James who married Ann TONKYN must have been connected with the family of Borallan and so would be the son of James and Mary (both QUICK) who married at Towednack in 1759. (Mary was the daughter of James QUICK of Borallan.)
It was the son of James and Ann who married Eleanor HODGE.
The family at St Andrews St, St Ives, in 1841 was that of the man who had married Eleanor HODGE.
James was a widower in 1841 (Eleanor died in 1824) but he remarried in 1845 to Hannah WORTH.
Of the above we are left with the marriage of James to Martha PEARCE and the two Census entries for Norway, St Ives and Beach, St Ives.
It is my opinion now that these are probably father and son.
The younger James bp. 14th July 1782 at St Ives s/o James and Martha.
Turning attention now to the older James - and it is probable now that he can be identified and linked to a family.
Relying on some sort of accuracy with his recorded age in 1841 gives us a probable birth of about 1750.
Prior to 1750 (but after 1740) I have recorded three James QUICKS:-
s/o James and Alice 1746 - bef. 1780 St Ives
s/o Richard and Ann 1744-1748 St Ives
s/o William and Mary 1747-1748 Ludgvan
After this (but prior to 1860):-
s/o James and Catherine 1751-1823 St Ives and Zennor
s/o Henry and Elizabeth 1759 - ? Ludgvan
s/o William and Catherine 1753 - ? St Ives
s/o Thomas and Margaret 1755 - ? Gwennap
AND
James s/o Richard and Ann (nee MATTHEWS) QUICK bp. 29th May 1751 at St Ives
It is this last man that I think was enumerated at Norway, St Ives in 1841 at the age of 90.
And I believe it most likely that it was this same James QUICK who married Martha PEARCE at St Ives in 1781.
I have also just done a search for possible matches for Martha PEARCE whilst also keeping in mind a particular burial at St Ives.
Martha QUICK buried 18th May 1817 age 63 (birth about 1754)
IGI produced only three possibilities of which one died at the age of two so, in effect, we have only two possibilities:-
Martha d/o John and Catherine PEARCE bp. 21stp April 1748 at Lelant
Martha d/o Collen and Martha PEARCE bp. 11th May 1754 at St Ives
Based on the age at burial the Lelant girl is six years to early.
But the St Ives girl is a perfect match.
Another possible link for James to be the son of Richard and Ann can be found in 'the old favourite' - the names of his children.
James had only five known children of whom only one, James, was a son.
In order they were James (1782), Martha (1784), ANN (1785), Elizabeth (1788) and Mary (1792).
If we consider James was named after his father and Martha after her mother then it is logical to suspect that ANN might have been named after a grandmother.
With her maternal grandmother also being Martha this leaves the paternal side where we have an ANN.
Thems my opnions folks!
