Anyone familiar with the name of TENBETH? In 1885 at Penzance a John TENBETH married Jessie TREWHELLA They had a son Henry Trewhella TENBETH born in 1887 - Penzance R.D. A bit of a search shows that the name is quite limited in the UK - at least that is the impression from FreeBMD. Searching the Census I found that John TENBETH was the son of Christopher TENBETH who married Emma MITCHELL ata Woolwich in 1856. Christopher was a soldier in the Royal Artillery and Census records show his place of birth as St Just. (No specification of which St Just.) Christopher and Emma had seven children - William, Margaret and John all born Woolwich, James and Thomas both born in Canada and Herbert and George both born in Penzance. Christopher died at Penzance in 1875 at the age of 45. A search of IGI shows just the one possibility that I can find:- Christopher s/o Elizabeth TREMBETH bp. 27th March 1829 at St Just in Penwith Seems most of his children married at Penzance but I am yet to pursue them. Any thoughts would be most welcome. CT

Ian, Have a look at the website www.tenbeth.org.ukIt is run by Kevin Tenbeth, and the earliest record he can find is of the same Christopher you have found. He speculates that Christopher was actually a Trembath, and rather illiterate with it! Have fun, Mike ;D

That was my impression also. But if you take a look at the 1841 Census you might find something a little interesting. If you simply use the surname field (all others left blank) and search on TENBETH you will find two entries for TYWARDREATH - Constant born about 1771 and John born about 1781. They are the only ones of the name I could find. Could be husband and wife or, possibly, brother and sister. And if you search for the name in FreeBMD and use 'All Types' for the event you will find a few there that cannot belong to Christopher. There are three registered at St Columb in 1850 and 1851 which is five and six years before Christopher was married. But then I can only find Christopher in the 1851Census and none in 1861. Most perplexing.

This may be of interest According to the "Surnames of England and Wales the ONS List" (This is an extract of an Office of National Statistics database, and contains a list of surnames in use in England, Wales and the Isle of Mann in September 2002. The list contains almost 270,000 surnames, shared by 54.4 million people.)www.taliesin-arlein.net/names/search.phpThere were only 17 Tenbeth's in England and Wales in 2002...... And there was me thinking Carbis was rather unique with 225 ! Best regards HeatherC

This Christopher almost certainly the son of Maddern Trembath and Elizabeth Trembath (her surname also). He being bapt.27th.mar. 1829 at St.Just. There were at least 4 other children. Maddern died Oct. 1840. Roy
