Christopher TREWHELLA was baptised at St Levan 2nd February 1834 and was the son of John and Anne (Nancy) (nee JELBART) TREWHELLA

Christopher arrived in Victoria, Australia in June 1858 aboard the 'Monsoon' with no sign of any family.

On the 15th April 1860 Christoher TREWHELLA married Elizabeth KEARNEY at The Parsonage, White Hills (Bendigo), Victoria and thereafter fathered 11 children in Victoria.

The Problem

1. I have never been able to find a record of Marriage for Christopher and Emily.

2. I have absolutely no idea as to the identity of 'Emily'.

3. There appears to be no record of another marriage for Emily.

4. I cannot find a record of Death or Burial for Emily.

5. I have not been able to find Ann or Emily in the 1861 or 1871 Census.

The only child to Richard and Annie that I have found is an adopted son, Norman, as per Newlyn St Peter Baptisms for 1886:-

Given my limited knowledge of the Trewhellas, especially in comparison to your good self, I do have one question...

I noticed from the 1851 census a Christopher Trewhella, born circa 1836 at Ludgvan, son of William & Jane Trewhella .

I presume that based on other information you have that you are able to eliminate him as the husband of Emily and father of Ann?

Safely eliminated.

This Christopher was the brother of my 2xgt-grandfather Benjamin and arrived in Melbourne with Ben in June 1854 aboard the 'Saldanha'.

In 1856 they were mining around Barry's Reef and Blackwood near Trentham.

The Christopher of my note was a first cousin.

I should be getting back to this one shortly as I have a couple of ideas in mind to try and track down Emily and Ann.

Could be long and exhaustive as I have never found them under the name TREWHELLA - apart from Ann's marriage to Richard CATTRAN.

Will keep you posted if I find anyting.

That's why you're on the big bucks!

Appears to me that yet another Trewhella Mystery might be marked as 'solved'!

Hope viewers are taking lessons here - there are many little hidden means of finding answers to a lot of genealogical problems.

Trick is to just keep on trying.

I don't know that I would have found this information but one of my projects for the night was to start searching for EMILY (no surname) to see if I could find any sort of match.

Saved me the trouble!

Just had the feeling that if Christopher had gone off without her and Annie they might well never have married, so I hunted through Paul for an Emily with child Annie and up she popped.

Sometimes I find the Cornwall online census project more useful to search than the usual sites - less likely to get crazy transcriptions but you have to know the area you want to look at and just use "find on this page"

The 1871 Census is interesting also.

Anne is still living with her grandmother but is now enumerated as her 'niece'

Seems odd that she was Registered as 'CORNISH' but then baptised soon afterwards at Paul as:-

She then appears in the 1861 and 1871 Census as 'Cornish' but resurfaces as 'Trewhella' when she married Richard Cattran.

I am sure people back then were psychic and did this sort of thing deliberately ! ;D
