One for Malcom - and perhaps others.
Whilst searching FreeBMD the other night I came across the following:-
John Trewhella KEIGWIN born 1840 Penzance R.D.
John Trewhella GRENFELL born 1850 Aston R.D.
As it turns out the two are first cousins.
Thomas KEIGWIN married Elizabeth Anne TREWHELLA 5th October 1836 at Madron
William GRENFELL married Martha TREWHELA 10th March 1849 at Sancreed
Elizabeth and Martha were sisters - daughters of John TREWHELLA who married Elizabeth WILLIAMS at Madron 10th February 1816.
William and Martha GRENFELL spent at least a few years in Victori, Australia where they had three children born and buried one.
I do not know if the KEIGWIN family were also in Victoria but I have so far found no children for them over here.
Thomas KEIGWIN was a carpenter and, according to the 1851 Census, was born at Penzance.
His age in 1851 'appears' to be 40 but could be 46.
In 1841 his age was recorded as 37.
I am yet to find a baptism for him but it appears he was not baptised at Madron.
That is where I need some assistance in identifying him.
In 1851 Thomas and Elizabeth were at 148 St Francis St, Aston, Birmingham, Warwickshire with three children (all born Penzance) - Elizabeth A, 13, John T, 11 and Thomas, 6.
Visiting them were William and Martha GRENFELL with four-week-old son John T.
If we can identify Thomas then Malcolm and I may have yet another connection. ;D
The 1861 Census is most interesting.
The KEIGWIN family is still living at Birmingham - BUT Thomas is now recorded as JAMES.
I know this is the correct family for a number of reasons:-
All are born Penzance.
Elizabeth is the correct age to have been the daughter of John TREWHELLA.
Son Thomas is still with them with his age (16) matching that of 1851.
Also with the family is nephew John HOCKING, age 10.
John HOCKING was the son of Elizabeth's sister Alice (sometimes recorded as ESTHER).
In 1871 Thomas and his son Thomas are enumerated alone at Birmingham although Thomas is not recorded as a widower.
Interestingly his age is 60 and this time he states his birthplace as PAUL!
William and Martha GRENFELL were also still living in Birmingham and now with an expanded family - including Emma and William who had been born in Australia.
BTW - William GRENFELL was baptised at Sancreed 21st November 1824 s/o William and Anne (nee BOSENCE) GRENFELL
In 1881 Thomas KEIGWIN gives his age as 70 and birthplace again as Paul - perhaps I have made a mistake with his age in 1841!
Reviewing the 1841 Census - Thomas KEIGWIN's age is certainly 30 but there is a mark at the top of the '0' which makes it look like an 8.
So Thomas was born at Paul about 1810 which means he is:-
Thomas s/o Thomas and Ann KEIGWIN bp. 13th May 1810 at Paul
Thomas KEIGWIN m. Ann TREGURTHA 1st November 1807 at Paul
Any connection there Malcolm?
CT
He is also now living back at Penzance.
It appears now that he was born at Paul about 1810/11.
