Hello Weemalla, and welcome. I have identified the following Enoch TONKIN marriages from Phillimore for you: Enoch TONKIN and Anne STEPHENS at Madron 27 – 11- 1731 to Constance JELBARD St.Levan 26-10-1766 to Sarah JOSE St.Levan 14-10-1809 & to Elizabeth SHARPLES Sennen 3 -12-1750 None of them would appear to fit the birth of James in 1805 but may give you some pointers In my own tree I have a cousin Henry Shakerley WILLIAMS, son of Martin WILLIAMS and Beaten SHAKERLEY, marrying a Catherine TONKIN at St.Levan 29th Nov 1845. Catherine was the daughter of Enoch TONKIN, farmer. I have not tried to develop this family as yet. Wishing everyone a great 2010 Mike

Welcome to Penwith Genealogy Weemalla From a quick look around I would suggest the parents of your James Tonkin are the following which I found in IGI:- Enoch Tonkin married Elizabeth Cockell 25th February 1802 Stoke Damerel, Devon I could not find a baptism for James but it seems Devon is one of those Counties where information is patchy at best for some areas. In fact every name I use (James, Enoch, William, Elizabeth, Jane etc.) with parents Enoch and Elizabeth to find a baptism the only results are later and in Cornwall. Might take a bit of work to find some answers on this one. I will have a think about some options and try to do a little digging around. CT

Weemalla - seems I may have to make a correction for you. You say that James Tonkin and Jemima Stephens were married in London in 1834 but I have just found something to dispute that. This information was found on Ancestry in London, England, Marriages and Banns, 1754-1921 > Tower Hamlets > Saint Dunstan and All Saints > 1848 James Tonkin of full age, widower, blacksmith of Stepney son of Enoch Tonkin, blacksmith married Jemima Stephens of full age, spinster of Stepney daughter of George Stephens, tailor 15th October 1848 at the Parish Church of Stepney Witnesses - Jane(?) Budding Barber and Ethiel(?) Price This confirms that James was son of Enoch but also tells us he was previously married. Hmmm - but here is an interesting turn of events! In 1841 James Tonkin, smith, age 34 was living at St Pancras, MDX with his wife and three children. And his wife was named JEMIMA! This suggests that James had two wives named Jemima which I would certainly consider most unusual. To be married twice and both wives were named Mary or Jane or Elizabeth would not be unusual but Jemima........... CT

From what I have been able to establish Mary Tonkin was the following:-
Mary d/o John and Mary Tonkin bp. 6th November 1803 at Sancreed
John Tonkin, labourer, married Mary Thomas 22nd March 1803 at Paul
Beyond that I have no knowledge at this point.

Hello Weemalla.
If your still interested in this Enoch Tonkin I can send you my research findings in Australia. It's only a few pages but may be of some help to you. I was told this Enoch was connected to my family line but I have not found the missing link as yet. You may be able to assist me with a bit of info as well.
Roy ... from Down Under.

I am looking for information on Edward Tonkin, born 1619 in England and died in 1691 in Springfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. There are several Edward Tonkins listed in the LDS archives that were born around that date, all in Cornwall, but what is in that archive has dates for "my' Edward Tonkin's parents that cannot be correct; they do show him born in Kenwyn but if the parents' info is wrong, of course I must take the birthplace data with a grain of salt.
Any help would be much appreciated.

In the Tonkin family search's, has anyone found anything about Mary Tonkin she married Uter Furze in Paul on October 12, 1824? I believe she was born in Madron about 1804 and died in 1861. Uter was born in St. Just in 1803 and died in 1864. He is buried in Sancreed.

As I said back in January I believe at this point that Mary was the following:- Mary d/o John and Mary Tonkin bp. 6th November 1803 at Sancreed John Tonkin, labourer, married Mary Thomas 22nd March 1803 at Paul Don't be mislead by the fact she was baptised in Sancreed! Remember that Sancreed and Madron share a rather large border and it is entirely possible that Mary was born in Madron even though baptised at Sancreed. A far from unusual occurrence!

CT, Murrastra-why. White gave me some information awhile back also, however I have misplaced it. I only wish I had some hard data - or records on her.

I can add a correction for you.
The OPC site currently shows that Mary was age 66 when she was buried at St Levan in 1864.
I have just had a look at the original PR and the age is clearly 61.
A correction has been sent to the OPC and I would expect their database to be updated soon.

So....'tis back to the drawingboard......I have Mary Furze (formerly Tonkin) as having passed through the Heavenly Portal in 1866 and been burried in St Buryan.
Now I look at it, it is unlikely to be g-g-g-Ma Mary Furze as she was only 52 when she answerd Peter's call. But this leaves the question, which Mary Furze was it? I couldn't have been Mary's daughter Mary, she was born in 1830.
Oh dear....dinner is ready. I'll have to look at this later.
