Although my primary interest here is with Matthew PHILLIPS there are a number of you with interests in the DAVIES.
Whether or not your DAVIES (var.) are linked to those I will mention here may not yet be established but I hope to have you participate in the discussion which involves the Parishes of St Erth, Perranuthnoe, St Buryan and Zennor at the very least.
Several years ago I copied some information from Vivian's Visitations regarding the marriage of John DAVIES and Elizabeth PHILLIPS.
Humphrey NOY was the son of William NOY who was Attorney General in the time of Charles 1 of England.
Humphrey NOY married Hester SANDYS and the Visitations recorded three daughters who had married DAVIES men.
A couple of nights ago I searched for information online about Humphrey NOY and was very surprised at one document I found which stated that Humphry NOY had only one child and heiress - Catherine NOY!
However the visitations were clear enough:-
Henry DAVIES married Hester NOY 20th July 1695 at Exeter
Richard DAVIES, gent., of St Buryan married Jane NOY 10th June 1682 at St Buryan (recorded as Mr. Richard Davies & Mrs. Jane Noy)
William DAVIES married Catherine NOY 21st July 1679 at St Erth
Online documents record that "Catherine NOY married William DAVIES, Esq., of St Erth"
Nother document records that one of Humphry NOY's daughters married John WYLLIAMS, Esquire but I have not followed this link.
Humphry NOY was resident at Carnanton ad died at Mawgan in Pydar in which Church he was interred in 1679.
Of interest to those with Towednack connections is that Humpry NOY conveyed the Manor of AMILEBRA to his son-in-law DAVIES and (at the time this was written about 1814) the property now belonged to Davies GIDDY Esq., M.P.
DAVIES - I know little of Henry, Richard and William or how they were related but Richard left a Will in 1694 in which he named his mother-in-law Hester NOY and also his 'cousin' Henry DAVIES of St Buryan.
Another was 'friend John DAVIES the younger, clerk, of St Hilary'.
Richard also referred to a bond dated 13th March 1679 from William DAVIES, gent., of St Erth, deceased.
William DAVIES - is the line of interest for me as it leads to the PHILLIPS connection.
William and Catherine DAVIES had five children that I am aware of with the youngest being son John DAVIES of Ednovean.
Vivian records his marriage as being at St Erth in 1720 however I have found no record of it.
John DAVIES married Elizabeth PHILLIPS and, according to Vivian, had only four children.
Daughter Catherine was born, according to Vivian, 6th January 1729 and married Edward GIDDY at St Erth 7th March 1765.
They had one son (not exactly correct!) whom they named DAVIES GIDDY who later married into the GILBERT family and eventually changed his name to DAVIES GILBERT.
Another interesting document I viewed the other night also conttradicts Vivian.
Davies GILBERT (bm. Davies GIDDY) 6th March 1767 Penzance died 24th December 1829 at Eastbourne, Sussex, age 79.
Only child of Edward GIDDY, curate of St Erth & Catherine DAVIES daughter of HENRY DAVIES of Tredrea.
ELIZABETH PHILLIPS was the daughter of Matthew PHILLIPS of Tredrea, St Erth.
Matthew was baptised at St Keverne 8th May 1660 son of Henry and Frances PHILLIPS and was one of 10 children.
His father, Henry PHILLIPS, left his property at Tredrea, St Erth, to Matthew in his Will in 1692.
No marriage has yet been found for Henry and Frances and it is not yet known how the family came to be at St Keverne.
However Henry baptised five children in that Parish from 1655 to 1667.
It is not yet clear whether the child, Jone, baptised in 1667 was his last child but his Will shows that he had five other children.
One of these was Phillip (Philippa) who marred Henry BANFIELD at St Keverne 14th July 1673 and who must have been born probably before 1655.
She was certainly not baptised at St Keverne and there appears no record of her at Gulval and I am of the opinion she was probably baptised at Zennor.
Although 'of Gulval' when he wrote his Will in 1692 Henry PHILLIPS was buried at Zennor 6th January 1694 and I believe he was originally of that Parish and that he was the grandson named in the Will of Matthew PHILLIPS of Zennor in 1628.
BUT how and when did Henry PHILLIPS acquire Tredrea (or part of it).
In his Will Henry left to Matthew 'land called Tredrea in St Erth held by a grant of Sir John Seyntaubyn, Baron, decd.'
AND how did his grandaughter Elizabeth, d/o son Matthew, come to marry into the DAVIES family who were obviously very well connected.
When Matthew PHILLIPS wrote his Will in 1720 he was 'Gent., of Tredrea, St Erth' and was obviously very well off.
Daughter Elizabeth was left 150 pounds and her sisters Joan and Phillip 120 pounds each on reaching the age of 22.
Wife Elizabeth was to get the 'chamber over the hall in Tredrea'.
(She was Elizabeth BOSANKO, widow and Matthew's second wife.)
This part of the PHILLIPS family obviously found themselves moving in 'the right circles'.
Further discussion/input will be most welcome.
