George Davis was born 3 August 1811 in Illogan. His parents were William Davis and Elizabeth Williams. On 25 March 1837 he married Jane Williams Tangye. Jane was born c. 1817 in Illogan, and was buried 2 August 1847. Her parents were William Tange and Elizabeth Williams. So far so good? My main query is with their children.
I have 5 children assigned to them, whose baptisms I have been checking on today in the Cornwall Centre.
William, bapt. 5 August 1838, died 19 March 1945?
Elizabeth Jane, bapt. 31 January 1841
Eliza Ann, bapt. 27 August 1843
Thomas Williams, bapt. 15 February 1846, buried 15 May 1846
Emma, bapt 28 May 1846 (unconfirmed), buried 15 July 1847 (unconfirmed)
When his wife Jane died, George married again, this time to Mary White on 12 March 1838. They had 2 children:
Thomas, b. 1848 c.
George, b. 1850 c.
Somewhere between the 1851 and 1861 Census Mary died.
So, to the Census returns:
In 1841 we have George Davis, age 30, Porter, his wife Jane aged 20, son William aged 3, and daughter Jane aged 1.
In 1851 we find George aged 38 living with 2nd wife Mary aged 24. Children listed are:
Jane, aged 11
Eliza Ann, aged 7
William W, aged 5
Thomas, aged 2
George, aged 1
It is William W I have a problem with. If he were aged 5 he would have been born c. 1846, yet the couple had another son called Thomas Williams Davis born in 1846. My second thought is that the enumerator recorded the name wrongly and it should have been Thomas not William. However, Thomas Williams Davis was supposedly buried on 15 May 1846. Is the burial for a different Thomas Williams Davis? But... why then would George and his second wife Mary also call their son Thomas
Does anyone know anything of this family? Maybe the transcription of the census image is wrong?
For info, in 1861 George was living with his sons Thos and George in Chygarder, Illogan. George was 50 years old. The remarks on the census state: "Slept in barne not in houses".
Any ideas anyone
