H Virginia - just call me CT (Mathew was the Trewella at Redruth that I was talking about early in this thread and he was the one who married Jane Northey) I will be taking another look at all of your information later tonight but I do have one or two points now. If you don't have a birth record for 'Patty' then try looking for her as 'Martha' as Patty was a pet name for Martha. But the most important thing for now is about Josiah and Emily. I did find a marriage for a Josiah Northey to Emily Buzza at Baldhu in 1867 and I first thought that this would be part of the family on the Mary Shepherd. But when I looked at the Marriage record on the OPC site the first problem appears. Josiah states on the marriage record that his father was SAMUEL! We have had plenty of discussion on this site about incorrect information on Marriage Certificates but this one seems a little different. There certainly was a Josiah baptised at Chacewater in 1843 to Samuel Northey and his wife Honor Boundey and he appears likely to be the man involved in this marriage. And at the time of the marriage Emily stated she was age 17 although she could have been a year or so older or younger. But what is more significant is that in the 1871 Census there is an Emily Northey age 19 who is already a widow and it seems to me that this would be her. I was wondering if perhaps there was some family connection between her Josiah and the family on the Mary Shepherd but I was not able to find it last night after only a short search. But if you have a certificate for Josiah and Emily I have to wonder if there is another marriage record I have not yet found. I am very interested to see that document so is there a possibility you might be able to scan the Marriage Certificate for Josiah and Emily and email it to me please? These Northeys are a tricky bunch so I will need all the help I can get I am thinking! CT

I see said the blind man whilst waving his wooden leg in the air and reading the paper to his deaf son!!! ;D Seek and ye shall find ................... although I have the feeling it should not have been so difficult! The 'other' marriage of Josiah and Emily emerges! ;D Josiah s/o William Northey married Emily Sleeman 28th April 1864 at Gwennap. Now let me see how things look. According to the Marriage record on the OPC site Emily was age 19 when she married which means she was born around 1845. So if that is her on the Mary Sheperd then she has followed the lead of the 'outlaws' and understated her age by a couple of years! (She would have been nearer 28 in 1873) It is possible that the age was difficult to read in the passenger list and 28 has been read as 25. NOPE! - I forgot the other option ............... she told a little porky when she was married and was only 17! (FreeBMD shows her birth registered in 1847) This would certainly explain the two youngest children and I think it is now fairly clear that they would have been children of Josiah and Emily. So I think that leaves Mary V Northey to account for. CT

Hi Matthew, just to update you on my Northeys and Mittens from Cornwall to New Zealand, my sister travelled recently to New Zealand and visited four cemeteries. She found the Mittens in Sydenham and Bromley and in Lyttelton Church of England Cemetery she amazingly found the graves of William and Elizabeth Northey, their headstones preserved in a wall of restoration of old monuments, buried together with one of their daughters Celia Ann Mitchell. So this is just about the end of my research into the Northeys. Just wanted to thank you. I wondered if there are old cemeteries and graves in heritage areas about in Kenwyn? Good luck in your research. Virginia

Hello Virginia - many thanks for the update and some good finds from the looks of things. Do you have the details of inscriptions on those Northey headstones? If so could you post the information for me please? CT

Hi CT,
The Christchurch Library in New Zealand is still closed due to the earthquake so I haven't been able to access the information about Mrs Elizabeth Northey's letters written back to Cornwall after the family emigrated. I look forward to reading these in full as I have only seen excerpts.
With regard to the Mittens, I have recently been told that they are from Ireland. Our family interest is the fact that Martha married David Mitten, who was apparently one of three brothers who emigrated to NZ from Ireland.
Martha Mitten is buried in Bromley Cemetery, Christchurch, New Zealand Surname: Mitten, Martha Date of death: Friday, 27 July 1934 Cemetery: Bromley Date of burial: Sunday, 29 July 1934 Block number: 2 Plot number: 169 Age: 82 years, 241 Bealey Ave, ChCh Widow Place of birth England, Years in NZ 68 Interestingly her husband David was buried in Addington Cemetery, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand Plot 0 Block No 1492C. However his memorial plaque is placed alongside Martha at Bromley Cemetery.
Her parents Elizabeth and William Northey are buried in Church of England Cemetery, Lyttelton, New Zealand. A most beautiful cemetery overlooking Lyttelton Harbour. This view would have been the first glimpse of New Zealand when the family arrived in 1873 on board the Mary Shepherd.
Canterbury Road Lyttleton. Gravestone now removed to Wall, Block F, No 57. Buried together with her husband William and daughter Celia Ann (Annie) Mitchell.
William Northey died 24 Dec 1887 in Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand Elizabeth Northey died 20 Aug 1891 in Lyttelton, Canterbury, New Zealand Celia Mitchell nee Northey died 29 Sep 1897 in Christchurch, Christchurch, Canterbury, NZ
Funeral announcment for Elizabeth Northey from The Star Newspaper, Christchurch, Saturday August 22nd 1891. I have these two articles and photos of these two graves but can't see where to post them.
My great grandmother Lavinia Moar nee Northey is buried at South Head Cemetery, Vaucluse, Sydney, Australia. Following her daughter's emigration to Australia Lavinia Northey settled in Sydney too.
Lavinia Moar nee Northey died 19 May 1928 in Sydney, New South Wales
The family all appear on Census of 1871 Where born: Kenwyn, Cornwall, England Civil parish: Gwennap Ecclesiastical parish: St Day County/Island: Cornwall Country: England Registration district: Redruth Sub-registration district: Gwennap
William Northy 55 Elizabeth Northy 55 Martha Northy 21 Celieenno Northy 19 William Northy 16 Lwenca Northy 12 Elizabeth Northy 10
Finally I wondered what chance that William Northey's father and mother might have a grave in Cornwall?
Robert Northey Born abt 1790 in St Clement, Cornwall, England
and married to Eliza (Elizabeth) Symons Birth abt 1797 in Talland, Cornwall, England
Kind regards Virginia

Many thanks Virginia. I had not determined the parents of William Northey so if I get a chance later on tonight I will follow up on that. For your Obituary and the photographs there is a means to attach them here. When you are compiling your post you need to look at the top of the form where you will see three 'Information Bars' with the first being for the Subject of the post. The second one is for Attachments and all you need do is use the Browse button to link to the item on your hard drive and it should appear once your message is posted. Just be aware that there is a 1Mb limit to attachments so you would probably have to add each item in a separate post. CT
