Here is another interesting little problem that could be posted in any one of a number of places.
It actually started with the need to determine the husband of a Trewhella girl in Wales and simpley escalated.
Mary Jane TREWHELLA was born in Eglwysilan, Glamorgan, in 1867 and was married in 1885.
(1st question - did she marry William George HORNE or Richard OWENS?)
She was the daughter of William TREWHELLA and Mary Jane (nee MARTIN) who were married at the Penzance Register Office 6th April 1863.
For those looking for Mary Jane MARTIN this information is from the Marriage Certificate.
William TREWHELLA was baptised 29th March 1843 at Towednack s/o Martin and Clarinda (nee THOMAS).
All I knew of Mary Jane MARTIN was that she was born about 1838, was 'of Halsetown, St Ives' when she married and that her father was Richard MARTIN.
As with some of my recent postings I determined to find out a little more about her background as it involved my own family.
Whilst searching for a possible marriage for Richard MARTIN I found a marriage in 1827 at St Ives for a Richard to Elizabeth QUICK.
I found that I had a family of Richard and Elizabeth MARTIN in my database but it did not seem right so I continued searching elsewhere.
I found a likely Mary Jane MARTIN in the 1861 Census as a servant to Richard and Mary MARTIN at Halsetown.
Right place and right age for my Mary Jane and it suddenly looked possible that Richard 'might' have been her brother. (He was aged 31.)
Moving back to the 1851 Census I found Richard (22), George (19) and DANIEL (16) MARTIN all lodging at the home of James and Christian BENNETTS at Ludgvan.
Richard and George were born at St Ives and Daniel at Ludgvan.
Christian was also born at St Ives and had been previously determined to be the daughter of the above Richard and Elizabeth MARTIN and therefore sister to Richard and George.
(George, by the way, was discussed in another thread not so long ago and had been married to Elizabeth Ann TREWHELLA and then later in Wales to Maria PREECE.)
Next question - who was DANIEL MARTIN.
Richard and Elizabeth are not to be found in the 1851 Census and nor in 1861 so I need to see if I can find death/burial records for them.
The 1841 Census sort of brought me undone a little because I suddently realised I had a rather large problem.
1841 Census - Crowlas, Ludgvan
Richard MARTIN, miner 35, miner
Elizabeth, 40
CHRISTIAN, 21 (born about 1819**)
Anne, 15
Richard, 12
George, 9
William, 7
Mary, 3
Johanna, 8 mths
At age 35 Richard might have been born anytime between 1801 and 1806 but the only Richard I could find who was anywhere near possible was baptised at Ludgvan in 1806 s/o Richard and Ann MARTIN.
Another question - just which Richard and Ann and who was she?
This meant that Richard would only have been about 13 when Christian was born and so highly unlikely to be her father.
On checking FreeBMD for the marriage of Christian MARTIN and James BENNETTS I found there was no such event.
BUT - there WAS a marriage at the right time of a James BENNETTS to a Christiana QUICK.
Now I will back up slightly - I could not find a baptism anywhere for Christian MARTIN but I had found baptisms for all other children of Richard and Elizabeth EXCEPT for William which I found most odd.
So I did another search and found:-
8th February 1835 William DANIEL QUICK s/o Richard and Elizabeth MARTIN
Right time for the baptism (based on Census records), right place, right parents.
And it also explains the DANIEL Martin in the 1851 Census.
But where the heck did that name come from.
I already had this fellow in my database (pending further investigation) as a result of my earlier forays into the QUICK family.
AND NOW FOLKS - I can start answering some of the above questions.
(Note that in the 1841 Census Elizabeth MARTIN was aged 40.)
I decided to begin with the name WILLIAM DANIEL QUICK as it was probably the most unusual I was dealing with in this family.
The first of this name was baptised at St Ives in 1806 s/o Richard QUICK and Elizabeth (nee DANIELL)
Elizabeth was the daughter of William DANIELL and so we have an explanation for young William's name.
William Daniel QUICK, strangely enough, had a sister named ELIZABETH who just happened to be baptised at St Ives in 1800.
And on the 14th March 1819 Elizabeth QUICK married William Williams QUICK.
William and Elizabeth had only three children.
The youngest was Jane who was baptised and buried in 1823.
Elizabeth was baptised in 1821 and was married in March of 1841 before the Census.
The eldest daughter was CHRISTIAN QUICK baptised 22nd August 1819 at St Ives.
This was the wife of James BENNETTS!
On closer inspection I discovered that William Williams QUICK was buried at St Ives 4th March 1824. - BINGO!!!
Everything suddenly fell into place.
Three years after Elizabeth QUICK was widowed she married Richard MARTIN.
And in the 1841 Census Christian was not Richard's daughter but rather Elizabeth's daughter from her first marriage with much of the confusion caused by the fact she was enumerated as MARTIN instead of QUICK.
Appears I have only two questions remaining to be answered:-
Which of two men did the younger Mary Jane TREWHELLA marry?
And exactly who were the parents of Richard MARTIN?
So Mary Jane MARTIN married William TREWHELLA and her brother George married Elizabeth Jane TREWHELLA yet I have to go back as far as a marriage at St Erth in 1606 to find a link between them.
Both families went to Wales also.
I hope this has been of interest, and of use, to some of you and I will be very happy if someone can fill in the details on Richard MARTIN for me.
A check of the 1891 and 1901 Census should answer the question of Mary Jane's husband I should think. ;D
