Williams... not a good name to research for Wales, nor apparently St Ives . Any help in finding a marriage for John Williams to Rebecca (Knight?), and who their parents may have been would be lovely
Details known are as follows:
1841 Census - Bailey Lane
John Williams, 55, Fisherman, In county
Rebecca Williams, 45, not in county
Samuel Williams, 14, In county
Rebecca Williams, 12, In county
Richard Williams, 10, In county
Elizabeth Williams, 8, In county
Philip Williams, 6, In county
Mary Williams, 3, In county
1851 Census - Baileys Lane, St Ives
John Williams, Head, Married, Male, 64, Fisherman, b. St Ives, Cwll
Rebecca Williams, Wife, Marr, F, 54, b. Yeal., Devon
Samuel Williams, Son, U, M, 23, Fisherman, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Rebecca Williams, Dau, U, F, 21, Netter, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Elizabeth Williams, Dau, U, F, 18, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Philip Williams, Son, U, M, 18, Fisherman, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Nancy Williams, Dau, F, 8 , Scholar, b. St Ives, Cornwall
1861 Census - Baileys Lane, St Ives
Rebecca Williams, Head, Widow, F, 63, Fisherman's Widow, b. Devon - Plymouth
Elizabeth Williams, Dau, U, F, 27, Domestic Servant, b. St Ives
1871 Census - Back Road
Elizabeth Noall, Wife, M, F, 37, Sailor's Wife, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Rebecca Noall, Dau, U, F, 5, Scholar, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Richard Noall, Son, U, M, 2 mths, b. St Ives, Cornwall
Rebecca Williams, Mother, Widow, F, 74, Sailor's Widow, b. St Ives, Cornwall
I belive son Samuel Williams married a Jane J "somebody" and in the 1861 census him and his family were at Norway, St Ives with son Samuel, age 8, Scholar.
John Williams and Rebecca (Knight's?) children I have as follows:
Richard, bapt. 30 December 1821 at 01 years & 10 months old; died before 1826.
William, bapt. 30 December 1821 (Did he marry Sally Taylor on 31 August 1851; then Hannah Eddy on 3 October 1852 )
Richard, bapt. 29 April 1826, died before 1831
Samuel, bapt. 23 June 1827 (married Jane Try Williams on 24 August 1851?)
Rebecca, bapt. 14 August 1829 (married James Botterall on 3 August 1851?)
Richard, bapt. 18 March 1831 (married Ann Vining Davies 24 October 1852 I think)
Elizabeth, bapt. 4 April 1834, (married Richard Noall 14 April 1861) died 16 March 1915
Philip Knight, bapt. 8 April 1836
Mary, born circa 1838
Nancy, born 22 January 1843, bapt. 26 February 1843
There are 2 references to Rebecca being born Rebecca Knight - her son Philip had Knight as his second name; Nancy's baptism had Rebecca listed as nee Knight. I cannot find Rebecca Knight's birth or her marriage to John Williams.
John is also an enigma.. A few John Williams died between 1851 and 1861 in the Penzance district so I can't find his exact year of death. It wasn't until I found Rebecca Williams' death in the West Briton that gave me a clue as to John's parentage. Rebecca died on 6 June 1879, and the newspaper report said she was the widow of John "Garland" Williams. I think John must have been the son of Garland and Elizabeth Williams, but again I can't find a marriage of Garland Williams to Elizabeth "somebody".
Any help with tracing John Williams and Rebecca (Knight?) back further would be much appreciated I also think they probably had more children, but as there are a few marriages with a John Williams listed as father in St Ives it is difficult to ascertain which belong to my family.
The census returns do not list a John Williams as being a child of John and Rebecca but I am inclined to think they did have a child called John and that he had left the household (and married?) by 1841. There are 2 marriages of a John Williams, one on 14 September 1862 to Mary James by Banns; the other to Elizabeth Bryant on 11 March 1864 by licence.
With so many John Williams' in St Ives it's difficult to sort which belong to which family
