Something occurred to me whilst reading through this thread. In Cornish 'ea' is pronounced 'ay' as in Carn Brea (pronounced Carn Bray) and, as in my own family, Meagor - pronounced Magor, as it is now spelled. It seems to me that could well account for the original spelling. Just a thought!
