Cornishmaid recently gave me a link to search the West Briton newspaper from 1841: freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~wbritonad/I found out lots of interesting snippets which I intend to follow up but it's also a lot of fun to read, giving you such a flavour of the time. I also found a few snippets from The Times newspaper on ancestry (including a naughty ancestor who sold cows during the Foot & Mouth epidemic in 1871!) Anyway, my question is, does anyone know if there are earlier editions of The West Briton, or any other local newspaper available online? And if not would they be available at Truro Records office? Best wishes, Carole

Newspapers: "The Cornishman" does not appear to be on-line, but is available in the Morrab Library, Penzance, a few yards from where the local newspaper office used to be located and where my late father started his career in journalism many moons ago. There is a guide to newspaper resouces in "Penwith Resouces" on-line (Google "The Cornishman").

The Cornishman can indeed be found at Penzance, dating from 1878 I believe. The West Briton is held at the County Reference Library in Truro and the Cornwall Centre, dating from 1810. There are a number of newspapers for different towns/cities in Cornwall, and I believe the Corwall Library Service has created an extensive resource of these, the principal collection of these is apparently at the Cornwall Centre (according to their leaflet).
I'm not sure if a list of these is posted on the Cornwall Centre's website, but if anyone wants a listing of papers held there and what dates they cover, feel free to give me a shout.
