A little bit to help you along.
Firstly keep in mind that the surname could appear as Chappel, Chappell or Chapple.
I believe your James to have been born about 1829-1831 at Zennor (do not have further details at the moment) and was probably the first child of the following marriage:-
James Chappel married Mary Woolcock 12th November 1827 at Gulval
There appear to be ten children from James Chappel's marriage to Jane (do not have those details available either) and it is difficult from the Census records to decipher some of the second-name initials.
Although all are supposedly born at Towednack I can find only two baptisms there:-
Mary Elizabeth and Alfred Edward were both baptised 7th October 1868.
From the 1881 Census it would appear that James has remarried to someone named Mary and she also appears to have been married before.
In the household there are five children who appeared with James in the 1871 Census followed by Mary Ellen MORLEY, daughter-in-law (read as step-daughter) and then follow Grace (age 3) and Alfred (age 7 mths).
Alfred was born at Towednack 3rd September 1880 and baptised 3rd May 1882.
Also in the household was Annie Jane who was a grandaughter of James.
She was born at Towednack 2nd July 1879 and baptised there 8th March 1882 as the illegitimate daughter of Annie Chappel.
I can tell you a little more about the family before this but the above is about all I can tell you about James just now.
Hope it is of some help.
Ian

A little addition to my last note.
Jane (wife of James) would be the Jane Chappell buried at Towednack 23rd February 1874, age 42, of Georgia.
Alfred Edward was buried at Towednack 12th August 1874 age 6.
Grandaughter Annie Jane was buried at Towednack 11th March 1882, age 2.
James' second son was John Uren Chappel born about 1854.
John Uren Chappel buried at Towednack 15th December 1905, age 51, of Market Jew St., Penzance.
James' father (James) was buried at Towednack 8th April 1884 age 82, of Georgia. (He was a widower in the 1881 Census.)
James himself was buried at Towednack 15th April 1910, age 80, of Georgia.
There was also a Walter Chappel, age 3, buried at Towednack 31st August 1876, of Georgia. I would presume he was also a child of James.
All for now.

Hi Thanks for the reply. This is some of what I have for the James Chapple family starting from my wifes parents and working back.
Her father: John Edward CHAPPELL m Hazel MADDERN 27 March 1948 Parish Church Penzance Cornwall
Johns father: Alfred Edward CHAPPELL m Elise SPENCER (b 4 Jan 1897 Nottingham) 10 Oct 1928 Penzance Cornwall .
Elise was married before and I think could have been SMITH but have not worked this bit out. (told to me by word of mouth)
Alfreds father: James Woolcock CHAPPEL b 1813 from Zennor m Emma SMITH Gulval lived at Nancledra
James father: James CHAPPEL b 1831 m Mary Woolcock 12 Nov 1827 at Gulval.
I am still sorting out the info Ian replied to me about the children.
And only today I went to Towednack church to look for the graves and found almost all of the ones Ian said about, but it was a little hard to read them owing to the age of them and the wear from the weather. Also noted the amount of BERRIMAN, CURNOW and of course TREWHELLA in this church yard.
Hope this is a help George

Hi
I know this is an old post - but still a newbie(ish) and catching up on all the old posts. James Woolcock Chappel (or any of the numberous variants) was my ggg grandfather (or so I thought). I don't have him marrying an Emma. Panic beginning to set in, have I gone terribly wrong?

Jo - belay the panic! There was quite a bit of mix-up in that particular post so don't be concerned. If you can let me know which was your link to the family and the name of your 3xgt-grandfather I am sure that I can sort it all out for you. For the early part:- James Chapel married Mary Woolcock at Gulval 12th November 1827 James Woolcock Chappel was baptised 30th May 1829 at Zennor James Woolcock Chappel of Embla age 22 son of James Chappel married Jane Bonetto of Embla age 21 daughter of William Bonetto, mason 11th September 1852 at Towednack Jane was buried at Towednack 23rd February 1874 James Woolcock Chappel married Mary Murley in 1877 (I don't have the details). There were 10 children from the first marriage and then Grace Ellen (1877) and Alfred (1880) from the marriage to Mary Murley. Hope that helps. CT

;D Phew, that's a relief. James Woolcock Chappel and Jane Bonetto are my 3 x g grandparents, their daughter Eliza Thomas Chappel b 1869 Towednack married William Maddern in 1890 2 x grandparents, their daughter Mary Jane Maddern married Robert Edwards Craze in 1914. Their youngest daughter then married Thomas (Percy) Hicks, from my other post re: Catherine Trewhella. I note that James Woolcock Chappel also had a sister named Eliza(beth) Thomas Chappel. Does anyone know where the name Thomas came from? I've only gone as far back as James Chappel and Mary Woolcock to date, but if anyone knows it would give me something to aim for, otherwise it might be years before I get there - thanks Jo

Hi Jo - now we know where some more of the pieces fit the picture looks a little better. BTW - the daughter of James and Mary was also Eliza Thomas and not Elizabeth Thomas. They also had a daughter Elizabeth Jane born in 1831 and who married Robert Osborne in 1855. The origins of the Thomas name escape me at the moment. A first glance would suggest that Mary was the daughter of Hugh Woolcock and Dinah baptised at St Just in 1802. Dinah's maiden name was Thomas so that would be the logical fit. BUT - one of the witnesses to the marriage of Mary to James Chappel was Nicholas Woolcock and this tends to change the thinking a little. Hugh and Dinah had no son named Nicholas and I can find no Nicholas Woolcock marriage anywhere near the right time. 50 years before or about 30 years later would be the closest. Nicholas might, I suppose, have been a cousin but I think it more likely he was her brother which means that the following family would be involved:- Thomas Woolcock married Dorothy Hill 7th July 1792 at St Just Elizabeth bp. 7th August 1793 St Just Thomas bp. 26th April 1795 St Just Richard bp. 5th June 1797 St Just William bp. 3rd November 1799 St Just Mary bp. 17th January 1802 St Just Ann bp. 17th January 1802 St Just Nicholas bp. 27th May 1804 St Just Grace bp. 3rd August 1806 St Just James bp. 17th July 1808 St Just Jane bp. 24th June 1810 St Just Grace bp. 22nd March 1812 St Just I can see no close relationship between Thomas Woolcock and Hugh so the above family would seem to be the most likely for Mary. And that of course means that the name Thomas must remain a mystery for a little while longer. CT

Gosh, thanks CT, seems I've got a couple of options to look at there' and both contain the name of Thomas. I've just taken a quick look at St Just on West Penwith Rescources (not had cause to visit St Just previously) and see the marriages go back to 1599. Plenty to keep me occupied for a white to come. Thanks everso ;D Jo
