Just joined tonight so thought I'd say hi Most of my lot come from St Ives and nearby: Rowe, Noall, Stevens, Uren, Berriman, Lugg, Craze, Batten, Payne, Bennatts. Have a Williams from Phillack who married a Polkinghorne from Crowan. . not getting very far with that line as yet Lots more names but they are a bit more distantly related. Nice to be here, and hope I can be of help to someone somewhere Cheers for now Bex

A very very hearty welcome to our first Cornwall-resident member! Hope you will make lots of contributions here - maybe you will even be able to help us locate local records that might be otherwise unavailable to us! As for surnames, I myself have some Paynes (St. Erth, 1600s), some Bennatts (Lelant & St. Erth) and some Urens (Lelant). May be we will connect.

Thank you very much ;D Anything needed from the Cornish Studies Centre in Redruth, or the Archive Centre in St Ives, or indeed any piccies from cemetaries etc anywhere in between, I'm your maid Looking forward to helping. Are you related to John Payne, Portreeve of St Ives, by any chance? Or the Paynes who owned the picnic grounds in Carbis Bay?

And a BIG WELCOME from the CORNISH TERRIER also! ;D Your offer of 'lookups' (and photos) may well be utilised. I was there in 1994 and found that, back then, they had items that were not in the CRO (or at least did not seem to be) so you may need to stock up on things like running shoes, notepads, pencils etc. Only joking of course. Please get involved and look through the existing postings as you may well see something you are interested in, or are able to help with. BTW - My family is Trewhella of Towednack, Zennor, St Ives, Ludgvan and, both earlier and later, St Erth but I am working on all families of the name (and its variants). Cornish Terrier

Thanks Cornish Terrier Oh yes, I have more notepads, pens, pencils and running shoes than you can shake a stick at. ;D Had a look in my family for any Trewhellas but the only one I can find is in a middle name "Clarinda Trewhella Noall", daughter of William Bryant Noall and Mary Ann Peters. Forgot to mentions the Hain and the Welch families from St Ives in my surname interests, and Stephens from Cadgwith. Have a few Curnows and Quicks, .. in fact I think everyone from St Ives is related to each other in some way or another. Only just found out my husband is my 7th cousin If anyone needs anything from down this way just give me a shout Bex

My Dear Cornishmaid - you have just provided me with a Trewhella I had not yet tracked down! So I would like to know a little more when you are able to get the information to me. I must say that I forgot to mention to you that I also have Noall in my background. My 2xgt-grandfather, Benjamin Trewhella, married Betsey Noall at Lelant in 1850. She was daughter of William Noall and Nancy (nee Kernick) so I would hypothesise that there might be some connection. The name Clarinda is of interest though so there may be another connection via another relation in the family. Will await your replies before pursuing that bit much further.

Oo, I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing.. ;D Clarinda Trewhella Noall is my 4th cousin 3 times removed, and the great grand-aunt of my hubbie. She was born 27 July 1893, and her parents were William Bryant Noall b1856 and Mary Ann Peters born 1853. William's parents were William Bryant Noall and Elizabeth Ninnes. I haven't found out where the Trewhella comes in as yet, but I suspect its from Elizabeth Ninnes's side as I have the Noall's traced back quite a long way, but don't have a lot on her side except that her father was William Ninnes. This is all as far as I can ascertain you understand I will dig out my Noall file in a minute. I know there is a Richard Kernick Noall in it, but I can't place the Betsey Noall and Benjamin Trewhella off the top of my head. Yes, funny you should mention a Clarinda. I was trying to sort out a Clarinda yesterday... ah, I know, she married a Rowe and I was trying to sort if the family was in any way related to mine. Hope the above is of some help

I have just found something interesting!? Decided to do a cursory search of St Ives Marriages and turned up the following:- 1 Mar 1873 by Banns John Peters 22 bachelor Fisherman of St. Ives (Father: John Peters, Fisherman) Mary Bone 20 spinster of St. Ives (Father: Edward Bone, Miner) Witnesses: William Bryant Noall, Mary Ann Peters The names of the Witnesses look very familiar! And then:- 1 Jun 1873 by Banns William Bryant Noall 18 bachelor Fisherman of St. Ives (Father: William Bryant Noall, Fisherman) Mary Ann Peters 20 spinster of St. Ives (Father: John Peters, Fisherman) Witnesses: John Paynter, Mary Cocking Noall Might be getting closer I am thinking!?!? If we go back a little further with Marriages we find:- 13 Mar 1843 by Banns William Bryant Noall of full age bachelor Mariner of St. Ives (Father: Philip Noall, Fisherman) Elizabeth Ninnes of full age spinster of St. Ives (Father: William Ninnes, Fisherman) Witnesses: Thomas Williams, William Ninnes And I have just found the baptism for Clarinda Trewhella Noall! But I think we should leave further discussion on this until you post a TOPIC on the board. Meanwhile, I am going to have a bit of a look before I eat and get a few hours sleep. I want to check more into this because of the Trewhella name bit I think it would be much more fair to all if this discussion was posted for all to see. Cornish Terrier

But for the moment, I think I'll take your lead and sleep on this one. You might want to go over to the Trewhella Board and post what you know about Clarinda, so Ian will have something new to play with... As for John Payne of St. Ives, is he the one that was executed sometime in the 1500s? The furthest back I can go is a George Payne, gent, of St. Erth. I think some of his kids went to St. Ives. In fact, I have a puzzle over him that I've been meaning to post if I ever get enough time (I have a long list of stuff I mean to post and it keeps getting longer... ) So much Penwith, so little time...

Not paying enough attention (as usual) and side-tracked by the Cricket and a couple of other things - I missed something fairly crucial in an earlier note! The mention of RICHARD KERNICK NOALL! This man was the brother of my 2xgt-grandmother Betsey Noall who married Benjamin Trewhella at Lelant in 1850! ;D So - we need to check out the connections there, I think.

Well - G'day and a very warm welcome from the Cornish Terrier in Australia. You have probably already noted some work on the Noall family so I look forward to your contributions. If you have not worked out my own Noall connection then let me know but I would like to have your opinions of things before 'feeding information' that may prove misleading. Look forward to discussing things with you and helping with what I can.
