Thanks folks....second time of writing this...the other one seems to have vanished into cyberspace!!
I couldn't count last night. My excuse is I had just returned from almost having my timbales frozen in a carol concert in a bitterly cold Cathedral and decided to resolve the difference between my list for Simon and Joanna and Dave Mitchell's list (ex Canada now residing in Melbourne). He had 14 children and I had 15 (not 13). Dave's list corresponds to Londoner's and I seem to have dreamed up an extra Simon from somewhere (Simon 1833 again...last week I had him marrying his own auntie). Interestingly, I too had a question mark against Mary Ann and Dave doesn't give her a date of birth and she is out of order on his list.
Resolved John Tregear Mitchell....was looking for surname Mitchell, but Elizabeth must have had him out of wedlock, but he isn't listed as a 'Base Child' Found his baptism in St Buryan on 19th June 1878 and his buryal 18th June 1883...just after his fifth birthday.

Has anyone any record of John Humphrys Mitchell (Bp 1855) s/o Samuel and Mary Ann after the 1861 census? I can't find him anywhere (Not to be confused with John Mitchell (Bp 1855) s/o John and Elizabeth Ann)

OK folks...found him. I think.... ;D John H Mitchell last seen in 1881 at 31 Lord St Millom Cumberland. Dob given as 1846 though! Mother Mary Ann living with daughter Barbara at No 20. Strange this as James, his elder brother who also moved to Millom is still in St Just in the 1883 Kellys Directory. Looks like Mary Ann, John H and Barbara were the first to move, but there is no record of Barbara's husband Thomas James.

Hello All, I've been faithfully reading this thread periodically since Tony first notified me of it, but haven't really had much to add until now. Very interesting stuff. There seems to be some question about Simon Mitchell and Joanna Olds' offspring. I can clear some of this up, as this my line of descent. The list of their children and birthdates that Londoner has listed a few posts back is correct, and I believe all the years are correct as well. At some point I'll be able to fill in the rest of the death dates for most, too. (Tony is right, I emigrated from Canada to Australia earlier this year and unfortunately, all of my source notes for this are on my computer back home. It'll be coming down to me in parts over the next year or so...) As for the question of Mary Ann - she was born and baptised in St Buryan, but died within the first year of her life. I believe she was born between Joanna and Simon as well. Naomi, Alfred (listed as Alphred in some Corwall records), Margaret, Joanna, Mary Ann, and Simon were all born and baptised in St Buryan (Naomi was actually somewhere else, I believe, but in that general area). The rest of the children were born in Canada. I have most of this generation sorted out and a fair chunk of the next generation as well. The best place to look for it would be on the World Connect website at wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/and enter the database name of "mitch500". One more thing I can add to this conversation, for what it's worth... I seem to recall 3 or 4 years ago when I was actively researching this, that I ran across a website for the Tresize family, who were in Australia, and had traced their roots back to Margaret Mitchell and James Tresize of St Buryan. Unfortunately, I didn't bookmark it, and when I went to look for it again later, I couldn't find anything. However, just out of curiosity, I think I'll try looking for it now... Cheers, Dave Mitchell

Hi Dave and thanks for your input. Afraid I have not done too much with this thread for quite some time due to being otherwise occupied with a number of other threads. I do hope to do more though as soon as I can. During the 'quiet period' I have started catching up on a few things of my own that have been neglected. Part of this has led me from Morvah across to Sancreed, St Buryan and St Levan with a couple of other stops along the way. One name that caught my eye was a Robert Davey MI(T)CHELL. Robert was one of a number of witnesses to the 1822 marriage of Philip MARRACK and Anna HODGE at St Levan. At first glance I thought there was a connection to another of my families but soon found out that I was thinking of a very similar name - Robert Michell DAVEY. I don't have time right at the moment to pursue Robert Davey MI(T)CHELL but would be interested to know if anyone has come across the name before and might know anything about him. Must get back to my own little problem for the moment but will be interested in further input here. CT

I'm now looking for the identity of another John Mitchell....he keeps popping up in the St Levan area.....as a witness to marriages
13 Aug 1815 Jonathon Humphrys Harvy m Honour Wallis witness John Mitchell. Similarly on 3 Aug 1831 Grace Kelynack Mitchell....11 Dec 1835 Henry Hodge & Mary Mitchell and 24 Nov 1841 twixt James Mitchell and Mary Hutchens Roberts.
I can't link any of these marriages to my lot as yet but am wondering if the elusive John can do this for me.
The John I'm looking for (assuming it is aways the same John) would have been born around 1790. Could he possibly be the John son of Ralph of Sawa? Ralph died in 1833 aged 57 and mentions John in his will.....my lot then farmed a couple of his fields......I've looked in BMD's and all the usual 'on line' stuff, but can't find a John who fits......they are either too old, too young or dead! Any info on this or any suitable John gratfully received

I cannot help immediately but will certainly keep an eye out for anything useful. But it seems there were a number of Parishes with their 'resident witness'. One Parish - St Ives I think - has Thomas WILLIAMS and he signed as a witness to countless marriages over, seemingly, countless years. It is possible that there was a succession of witnesses of the same name over the years but ... 1. Could it have become a lucrative family business handed down from father to son? - awful good planning to ensure a long line of Thomas WILLIAMS I should think. Suppose there was always the option - only have daughters? - then get young Lizzie to sign as Thomas and the lucre keeps rolling in. ;D 2. Maybe old Thomas got sick of weddings but had signed a contract? Too easy! - simply sign the dotted line in a series of Registers and go fishin'! Seriously - will keep my eyes open for anything of help.

Sorry to disapoint you CT, but John Mitchell only seems to have acted as witness for other Mitchells (excluding Jonathon Humphrys Harvy and Honour Wallis....and remember how this thread started ....Londoner wanting info etc on Humphrys/Mitchell/Wallis) Looks as thought John kept it in the family, not like your Thomas Williams. Found another 'professional' witness in St Buryan too...chap named William Thomas. Wonder if he was 'Best Man' at all these weddings....imagine, all those stag nights in Prague back in the 1840's

Reading the records of the local Pharmaceutical Co. could make interesting reading then. Most interesting that your John MITCHELL seemed to only sign as witness to 'family' and certainly something worth pursuing. There is a 16 year gap between the first two marriages you highlighted. Are there any marriages between 1815 and 1831 where this John was a witness? If not then it may well be two different men. Don't worry - just checked and the answer is 'no', at least not at St Levan. He does not appear to be active at Sennen but also interesting is that I can find no burial for him at St Levan. I was hoping there might be some sort of lead there but .... Have you checked St Buryan or perhaps Sancreed?

I'll have to dig out my Mitchell notes and get back to you but I have a feeling that I thought, like Tony that John was the son of Ralph at Sawah. The Mitchell connection to Jonathan Humphrys Harvey was that James of Boscarne was his guardian and William of St Levan was his step-uncle. The James who married Mary Hutchens Roberts was listed as Farmer at Sawah when his daughter Elizabeth was baptised in 1844 so not son of John as his father is deceased at time of marriage but possibly nephew or younger brother? Not sure about Mary who m Henry Hodge - need to check Buryan baptisms (I seem to remember that some of Ralph's were bp there) as the only St Levan Mary (bp 1821 born 1819) would have been a bit young to have been marrying in 1835. But of course you also have your non-conformist Mitchells to check! Good luck!

No luck...tried everywhere sensible, but can find no John of correct age, location etc. I agree CT, there could be two Johns....Lesley, I have the Ralph Will in front of me as I write and he had a son John.... Looked again at Burials in Sennen, Sancreed and St Buryan...no sign of him BUT!!!! I found two Lavinia Mitchells of Boscarne. One died 18/12/1853 aged 56 and the other 18/05/1852 aged 42. Where did the other one spring from... . I must investigate!

Now here is a problem - at least for me. (Could be I have some incorrect data here.) In the 1851 Census at Boscarne is the widow of James MITCHELL. Her age is indexed as 49 with a birth at St Buryan about 1802. My first impression was that the age was 42 but there is no comparison to other '2's' on the page. But it really does not look like a convincing '9'. However, I can find no Lavinia HARVEY in IGI anywhere near being born around this time and no Lavinia of any surname either. If born around 1801 or 1802 then she does not match either of the burials. And I can only find one Lavinia MITCHELL (var.) in the 1851 and even the 1841 Census. I am a little lost at the moment.

Boscarn,1,Samuel Harvey,70,,Agricultural Labourer,In county, ,,Simon Mitchel,8,,,In county,
As Samuel Harvey was witness to the marriage of James & Lavinia, and their son Simon is living with him (on the next page after the rest of the family) I think it safe to assume that Samuel was Lavinia's father. But agreed no baptism for her.
I'm wondering if the second death was for Lavinia b 1833 (daughter of James & Lavinia) and the age was entered wrongly.
Oh, and also :15 Sep 1816 James c/o Ralph (Yeoman) & Grace Mitchell of Borah - the one who m Mary Roberts.
