HI, Re Captain Sampson Shakerly. I have found a baptism record for a Sampson Shakerly January 1620 St Just In Penwith, Cornwall, father Benet Shakerly. Would this be Captain Shakerly? I have read a few things online that say he was not born in Cornwall. Any help with this query would be appreciated.

My son's grandfather's grandmother was Philadelphia Shakerley's daughter Annie, aka Mary Ann. He's quite keen to narrate Captain Samson Shakerly's civil war experiences but he can't find any back-history earlier than the existence of Samson's father Benet Sakerley. He was quite excited to find this thread. He's looked up Sir John Arundell, royalists and the Scilly isles.
He was blocked from making an account here because "In accordance with United States law, we do not allow members under the age of 13" which he thinks odd for a Penwith Genealogy site.
Neither of us know yet how to access wills or court records, or what reference book covers this fragment of the civil war in detail. Could I ask on his behalf for a little advice on what to read or where to look, possibly in a PM if we're off topic?

Hello John, I've been looking at the Shakerley family for years, and most of what I know about Sampson has come from snippets on the internet. I'm assuming that Philadelphia is the daughter of William SHAKERLEY and Honor TREMBATH of St. Just. William was the 4th William in a line of descendancy from Sampson. I am descended from John Shakerley, credited as a son of Bennett Shakerley, brother of Sampson. However I'm still not convinced this is correct. As you might expect there was a lot of upheaval during and after our civil war, and it's possible my John arrived in St. Just after hostilities ended. He would certainly have been at least close kin of Sampson. Sampson was 2nd in command of a unit of 800 men that held out on the Isles of Scilly until June 1651. A lot of researchers have been looking for Bennet over the years with little success as far as I am aware. I have a theory which I have been working on today, but the further back in time we go, the less records to check. I can see what else I can dig out for you in the next few weeks. All the best Mike Angove
