Hi, I am hopeful that some kind person/people might be able to help solve a riddle which has been puzzling me for ages.
My great grandfather, Arthur Carvossoe Matthews( born 1841), apparently came out to Australia in 1858 on the S.S. Plantar along with his father, Robert Matthews(born ~1817), and two brothers, Robert Matthews (born 1836) and Matthew Carvossoe Matthews (born 1845).
Now my query is really about the father, Robert Matthews, who married Mary Matthews in 1835 in Paul. I believe that this Mary Matthews died in 1837 but cannot find any supporting documentation . I have evidence that Robert , by then a widower aged 21, married a Mary Phillips Carvosse in 1839 also in the Parish of Paul. Can anyone suggest where I can find some supporting evidence of the first Mary Matthews demise?

I believe I just mentioned in an email that I had not seen you here for a while!! Mary Mathews of Trevithal age 23 was buried at Paul 24th September 1837 If you log onto West Penwith Resources - west-penwith.org.uk/ - you will find a listing for Paul under Church of England Parishes. Scroll down and you will find links for transcriptions of Marriages, Baptisms and Burials. You will find both Marriages for Robert as well as the burial for Mary in here. CT

Sita - I can also confirm that Robert Matthews along with sons Robert, Arthur and Matthew arrived in Victoria in January 1858 aboard the ship "Planter".
However Robert senior must have returned to England soon after as he appears in the 1861 Census at Sheffield, Paul with his wife and the rest of the children.

Hi C T,
Many thanks for you prompt replies. Yes, we do believe that Robert senior returned to Cornwall without his three sons but I don't know when or on what ship.

I did have a quick look at the PRO Outbound Passenger Index but could not find Robert.
Not sure how complete that Index is yet and it only deals with passengers leaving Melbourne I think.
And unfortunately he would have been a little early for the current UK Incoming Passenger lists.

Anyone with an idea as to how, if at all, Robert Matthews, b St Just, 2 Sep 1846, fits into all this?

At this point I cannot see a connection and there appear to have been a number of Matthews families around the West of Cornwall with Robert being not totally uncommon.
It would appear your Robert is probably the son of Robert Matthews and Jane Robyns who married at St Just 26th November 1836.
In the 1851 Census they were living at Pendeen with Robert being the third of six children.
Robert Senior was born at St Just about 1808 and Jane also at St Just about 1809 according to this Census.
