On the John Philips thread I described how the will of a Richard Rowe (or Rawe) of Zennor, dated 1637, refers to his sister Joan wife of John "Phillipp", and to John's son Thomas.
It also names another sister, viz. Jane wife of William Thomas.
A John Phillips was granted the administration of Richard's estate in 1647 during the minority of Richard's two daughters Jacquett and Zenobia. It seems likely that this is the same John. Jacquett was married by 1650 to a John Richards, and by 1653 the administration was in the hands of the two sisters, who divided their father's goods between themselves. Richard’s estate was sizeable, amounting to £133.14.06
The reference to Jacquett’s husband makes me wonder if she was a forebear of the later Zennor Richardses. The question cannot be answered at present, however it would not be too surprising if they were.
On the question of Richard’s parentage, the first candidate for his father that I found was the John Rowe, husbandman of Madron whose will was proved in 1616. It mentions his brother Thomas, sister Jennet, son Richard (to whom £13 was bequeathed), William, William’s wife Margaret, a daughter Jane Nicholas, her daughters Jane and Katherine, Jane the wife of (a son?) John Rowe and the said John her husband. The testator’s wife Margery was appointed executrix. The overseers of the will were Thomas Rowe of Zennor and John Jenkin of Trew.
However there are some problems with identifying this John as the father of the Richard who was brother-in-law to John Phillips. . The testator lived in a different (if nearby) parish, the details in this John’s will are inconsistent with what “our” Richard supplied about his siblings, and Rowe was not an uncommon name in West Penwith.
A more likely candidate has since emerged from information held at the Cornwall Record Office and pertaining to the Rashleigh Estate, which shows that in 1620 Zenobia Prideaux, widow, and her son William leased land that was part of the manor of Trethewy for 80 years to “Rich. Rawe s. of Thos. R. of Zennor, yeoman”. It seems pretty apparent that this Thomas is the same Thomas who was the brother of the above John, and hence their sons were first cousins as well as namesakes.
I would therefore opt for Richard, Jane and Joan’s father being this Thomas, the brother of the John of Madron. In a page of the bishop’s transcripts from which the top portion, and hence the year, is unfortunately missing, but which follows on from the preceding page's christening and marriage entries for 1625 and hence appears to be the same year, we read that “Margerye the wife of Thomas Rawe” was buried on 3 February, and the next entry is the burial of a James Elyes alias Raw, whio died later the same month.
