Eeeee! Something is starting to fall together!
Ian posted the following Phillack baptisms in the John 1654 thread:
Joane Phillippe d/o James bp. 12th August 1580
John Phillippe s/o James bp. 25th February 1582
Katheryn Philip d/o James bp. 13th March 1583
Thomas Phillippe s/o James bp. 26th September 1585
Agnes Phillippe d/o James bp. 6th March 1587
Priscilla Phillippe d/o James bp. 1st January 1591
Pascha Phillip d/o James bp. 17th Novmember 1593
Anne Phillipe d/o James bp. 12th October 1595
Pascus Phillip d/o James bp. 15th April 1598
JAMES PHILIP s/o MATTHEW bp. 21st March 1599
Looking thru my probate database, I found the following:
THOMAS PHILLIP, husbandman, of Zennor
written: 10 Nov 1642
proved: 4 Dec 1645
"being prest for the wars in the King's Majestie's service, doubting of my return"
brother: JAMES PHILLIP 6 d.
sister: JANE PHILLIP 6 d.
sister: PASKUS DANYELL 6 d.
MARY her daughter 2 sh. 6 d.?
WILLIAM DANYELL 2 sh. 6 d.
ELIZABETH DANYELL her daughter 2 sh. 6 d.
SIBELL DAVY "for the natural love & affection I bear unto her" all my right in Busswednack until after the death of my mother ELIZABETH PHILLIPS; also all the rest & executrix
Thomas ( ) Phillips
witnesses: SAM: SWEETE, vicar, JOHN ( ) PHILLIP, GEORGE ( ) THOMAS
Inventory 25 November 1645 by JAMES PHILLIPS & NICHOLAS HOSKIN
AP/P/899
This Thomas would appear to be the man chr. at Phillack to James.
It would appear that James (the father) migrated to Zennor by about 1600. I presume that the brother James listed in the will was born at Zennor, shortly afterward.
Sisters Paskus and Jane (apparently Joane) are both represented in the will.
Brother John is not. Was he deceased? Or simply not left anything? Certainly there is a John Philip who was one of the witnesses, as well as the inventorier James Phillip, who I presume was the brother.
Could John who witnessed the will be a son of Thomas' brother John? (assuming that the latter did indeed predecease Thomas)
The one major discrepancy is that Thomas gives his mother as Elizabeth, not Katherine. Did James' first wife die before Thomas' birth and he quickly remarried? Or is Elizabeth really a stepmother, who came along a bit later but raised many of the children?
The mention of Boswednack is very helpful also, as James, son of Mathew also held some interest in that property according to his will.
One further note: Matthew Philips had two inventories taken. Usually when this happens it indicates goods in two different parishes. One of his inventoriers was John Payne, gent, probably the same man who married Jane Adams in Phillack in 1605.
