I have an interesting surname on my paternal side, John Michell, that sounds foreign!. Born in Gwennap, he ws a mine agent, and married Elizabeth Reed, whos father was William Reed a farmer from Gwennap.
Is Reed a Scotish or Cornish surname? Does anyone know anything about the Michell's andReeds of Gwennap.

Many MICHELLs were simply MITCHELLs without the T.

Hi Londoner, and Kerthen
The dates are John Michell mine agent was living with William and Elizabeth Reed and family 1851 Gwennap. He married daughter also Elizabeth 1853.
In 1891 census John Michell was a mine agent and farmer, parish St Day, Trevethan Farm, his mother in law Elizabeth was living with them aged 86, living on own means.
I think the people living in cornwall and America, and elsewhere have the spelling Michell without the t. Its a recognised spelling. Though the spelling with the t would be a different sounding name. Though you could be right.

Don't get tied up about the spelling of Michell. I have seen it spelled Mitchell, Michel, Mychel, Mychyl, (although the last one looks suspiciously like a cream used to combat fungal infections). Clerks etc used to write the name as they thought it should be spelled and as very few could read who was there to complain or correct. Incidentally, the other day I received an invoice made out to me as Mr Michell......I paid it!

A few likely candidates for you: John Michell (father Richard, Mine Agent) m Elizabeth Reed (father William, Dairyman) Kenwyn 22 Oct 1853 (Cornwall opc database) gwennap-opc.com/Richard Michell m Ann Hodge 16 Jan 1812 John s/o Richard & Nanny (diminutive often found for Ann)of Trevarth Lane baptised 31 Oct 1824 Zenobia's Cornish Probate index has Michells in Gwennap back to 1697 - and lots of Michells elsewhere! 1841 Census Class: HO107; Piece 137; Book: 11; At Trevethan: Ann Michell, independent 50 John Michell 15 Joseph Michell 13 Nanny Michell 16 Thomas Michell 25 William Michell 20 Eliza Hodge 50 Harriot Hodge 40 by 1851 Thomas & John are no longer with Ann, the Hodge's are Ann's sisters. I haven't looked up all the children's baptisms but you should be able to find them and probably go back and find Ann's family. There was at least one other Richard Michell m Phillipa(either Trewartha or Endain) but in 1841 their son John was only 5 Eliza Reed (mother of Elizabeth) was from St Erme and I found on IGI: Elizabeth Crispin Reed d/o Wm & Eliz bap 25 Dec 1823
