Would like to hear from anyone who may have come across the Osborne name.
My line come from Andrew Osborne whose parents were William and Jane Osborne. Jane's maiden name was Penglase and she was born in Breage.

Please post a little more information on this and we shall see where it leads. I have worked on the Osborn(e) families in the past but the majority have been much further West around St Ives, Towednack, Zennor and Morvah. The more information you can provide the more we may be able to help.

As you say most of the Osborne's seem to come from further west, but whether my lot came from there originally I don't know.
In 1841 the family were living at Illogan Highway,1,Elizth. Osborne,,45,William Osborne,20,,Copper Miner, Elizth. Osborne,,15,Jane Osborne,,14,Henry Osborne,13,Andrew Osborne,11. They were still there in 1851 and in 1861 they were inTolskithey,William Osborne,Head,M,38,,Miner,Illogan, Jenifer Osborne,Wife,M,,33,Miner's Wife,St Breage, Elizabeth J. Osborne,Dau,U,,9,Mine Girl,Illogan William H. Osborne,Son,U,7,,Mine Boy,Illogan Andrew Osborne,Son,U,5,,Scholar,Illogan Samuel Osborne,Son,U,4,,At Home,Illogan Mary Osborne,Dau,U,,2,At Home,Illogan Cornwall Emily Osborne,Dau,U,,8m,At Home,Illogan Cornwall.
William H and Samuel Osborne emigrated to the US. Samuel married Ellen Jane Cock Redruth registration. I purchased the certificate. My line comes through Andrew who married Mary Richards in 1880. I have that certificate as well.
Mary Osborne married a Pears and lived in Devon, but I don't know anything else about her.
By 1891 Andrew and Mary had a daughter Emily and a son William Henry. I don't know What happened to the son.

Genie - thanks for that information and let us see what we can do with it. I have just now checked the 1841 Census and see what you have seen. Will take a look at the later Census records shortly but decided to try and track down some Illogan information first. Unfortunately there has not a lot of information on Illogan records that have been made available online as yet but there is something. This following is from the St Illogan Parish Church Burial Ground Records:- SS 3 21 29/04/1897 Osborne Andrew SS 3 29 17/07/1897 Osborne Andrew Jun (Jan?) SS 3 21 30/07/1900 Osborne Grace SS 3 2 18/01/1897 Osborne W.H. SS 7 62 17/02/1909 Osbourne Emily SS 7 62 05/06/1948 Osbourne John Henery SS 7 62 19/09/1905 Osbourne Sophia At the moment I cannot find the family in the 1851 Census so would appreciate further details here (including the spelling of the name) so that I can have some sort of continuity. I do not have a lot of time tonight so will not pursue the later Census until I here back from you. I did do a check on Pawley-White's 'Handbook of Cornish Surnames' and found that the name does not appear. This seems a little odd as I have records of the West Penwith Osborn(e) families back to at least the mid 1600's. It may be that they were from elsewhere but much work is yet to be done. Will look into this further.

SS 7 62 17/02/1909 Osbourne Emily SS 7 62 05/06/1948 Osbourne John Henery SS 7 62 19/09/1905 Osbourne Sophia One of the Andrew Osborne's is my g.grandfather and believe the other may be his uncle. Grace, I believe is the other Andrew's wife. I have the index of entries for the parish of Illogan and the Osborne names are spelt as Osborn,Osbourne,Orsbourn,Osburne and Osbron. 1656 seems to be the earliest. Mine have always been spelt Osborne. There aren't any Penglazes in the index. Jane who married William Osborne was born in Breage but i don't know when she lived in Illogan.

Not being deliberately sarcastic but 'welcome to the fun'. I have not dealt much with names outside Cornwall (except for Australia of course) but when I have it has been interesting. With Cornish records I can say for certain that you will have a lot of 'fun' and a lot of inherent 'problems'. Your point about the 'Osborn' name is, in context, probably minor. With Trewhella and its variants I have had a number of problems over the years and at one stage I think I counted 21 variations of the name in my database. (try Trewhellyea as an example) Your point about the 'Penglaze' name is well taken and I have always thought that to be a name more from the Breage area rather than it's fairly close neighbours. How about you tell me a little more of what you know about the Penglaze and Breage side of this family as that might add some further clues. I have tried to do some tracking of the Osborn (sic.) people over the years but it was mostly to try and find connections to Zennor and that area. But I seem to recall seeing the name in the Phillimore & Taylor Marriages for St Hilary. I will try and follow this up as I can but would like you to follow up on that Penglaze thing a bit for me if you could. Must check out the last few messages then it is 'tucker time'.

Seeing that 1656 seems to be the earliest that the Osbornes were in Illogan I am thinking that they may have come from further West.
I don't know very much about Jane Penglaze

I think the Osborne name (var.) appeared in the area quite some time before 1856 but I am working on depleted brainpower right now. It was certainly a name that I have encountered more down West but when we are talking 1856 ...... ?? More work to be done but I will need to try and check some more reesources before I can add much to this. If you think of anything more that might help then let me know. Will see what i can do anyway.

Just noticed that I quoted '1856' instead of '1656' also. So don't worry. Right - William and Jane were married in the Redruth R.D. December Qtr. 1851 Vol. 9 Pg. 339 In the 1861 Census Jane is known as 'Jenifer' and she was aged 33 which places her birth at about 1827/8 at Breage. It looks like she is probably the daughter of William and Mary Penglase who were living at Trewavas, Breage in 1841. An interesting point to be made here - it begins to look like the names of PENGLASE and POLGLASE may be a little confused. I found this:- Jane d/o William and Mary POLGLAZE bp. 22nd October 1827 at Breage. NO Jane PENGLASE (Penglaze) to be found. It is 'possible' her parents were:- William POLGLASE, miner, of Breage married Mary KITTO, spinster, of Breage, 1st October 1816 Be interested in any further information you can supply about your links here and will see what more I can track down for you.

William's father was Henry Osborne a miner and Jane's father was William Penglaze and he was also a miner.
William and Jane married in October 1851 and they were of 'age'
He was living at Illogan Highway and she was living at Harris Mill.

I am having trouble finding both William and Jane in the 1851 Census at the moment - no matter what combinations I try with surnames etc.
But I do think that the POLGLASE entry I posted earlier 'may' be close to correct. Will take another look at this as soon as I can but need to move on for now.
