Robert Bear born abt 1890 Ludgvan emigrated to the US and in 1920 he was living with his wife Phoebe and they were boarders. In 1930 Phoebe is a widow who owns her own house.
They lived in Wayne County Detroit.
Will I be able to find on-line his marriage and death and pehaps naturalisation papers.
I have been to one site and if I want details I would have to phone through card details which isn't practical when one lives in the UK.
Robert's father was called George.

This would be the following:- 1901 Census - Tregender, Ludgvan George Bear, head, mar, 51, railway labourer, worker, Ludgvan Emma do., wife, mar, 50, Ludgvan Michael H do., son, 20, Ludgvan Richard H do., son, 18, coal carter's labourer, worker, Ludgvan Robert T do., son, 11, Ludgvan Herbert do., son, 9, Ludgvan Barbara Bennetts, visitor, 25, Scotland I cannot really answer your questions on this one because I simply do not know. I have been to the area as I have relatives there but that was back in 1994. Perhaps Zenobia or one of our other US based members might be able to shed some light on this. But it might be helpful if you could post the details of 1920 and 1930 that you have mentioned. If I think of anything else that might help I will post another note.

It has taken some time but I have found a marriage for Robert Beare. He married Phoebe Hemmings 0ct 25th 1919. His parents are George and Emma (Williams) Beare and her father was William and her mother Mary J Tolly. Robert appears on the 1920 census but in the 1928 Detroit City Directory Phoebe is on her own. Still not able to find a death date.

Hi Genie, Here are some resources for you. www.deathrecords.com/michigan will take you to links where you can find forms, ordering information and research fees for vital records. The Wayne County and State of Michigan links are at the end of the webpage. You can get Detroit death records from the city, and their fees appear lower than what you might pay through the State, but they handle orders only in person or by mail. If you don't know the date of death, at least you'll be able to estimate how much the record/research might cost if you decide to go ahead based on what you know. Unfortunately, the online death record site that I like for Michigan only goes up to about 1920, and Robert died before the Social Security Act was passed, so the SSDI won't help either. Naturalization records are a whole different ballgame. From the 1920 Census, it looks like Robert and his wife had filed their Declarations of Intent, since their status is noted as "PA." By 1930, when Phoebe is listed as a widow, the code is "NA" indicating that her naturalization process had been completed. Wayne County does not have an online index of the names of people who filed for naturalization like some of the other counties do, but it does appear that the Records Index for the 1920-30 timeframe that you'll be needing is 85-86 and that that the state has them (rather than the regional National Archives Center in Chicago.) Here's the fun part: due to government budget cutbacks, the Archives of Michigan was merged into the Department of Natural Resources. www.michigan.gov/dnr Look at the blue boxes that run down the side of the web page and select Michigan Historical Center --- the first item in the drop-down box that appears will be for the Archives of Michigan. They have an information leaflet, etc. Hope this helps!

Thanks for that zibetha. I had been to the Michigan site in the past. Robert would have been a nephew to the Beare family I have been researching so I won't be purchasing any certificates.,although it is nice to see where other members of the family emigrated to. The 1940 census will be published next year so it will be interesting to see if Phoebe is still there.
