Sue My friend`s relative is Jas CURNOW 1818Tow-1882PZ district (sp. Jane RUSSELL)who was a tin miner in Gulval1841 on then Higher Ninnes Madron in 1881. He is son of Wm/Eliz BOLITHO who also appear in the Parrott/Heywood family tree on Ancestry. A note there says another son Thos had a dau My Quick CURNOW who pursued Ric Berryman of Tow for maintenance payments for her base dau. This is based on Ponsandane(Bolitho) pps in c 1860 which are presumably at Cornwall R.O. We had a plumber in Newlyn named Bolitho but Lady Eliz? Bolitho was Lord Lieutenant of Cornwall a few years ago and gave B&B to Princess Ann at Trengwainton House Madron. They recently rescued a nearby private school. They were tin smelters for centuries with their own frank before becoming bankers and my Barclays cheques still have Bolitho`s Bank at the top!.

The Bolitho family. My late father knew the family. His maternal g-father, William King, was employed by a Bolitho, as were one or two other relatives. W King was "moved" from the New Forest, where he was a gamekeeper, by a Bolitho, to a job in Cornwall. Another relative, a son of WK,was, apparently, head gardener at Trengwainton. W King (died Madron,1937) taught the future King Ed V11 archery and shooting. I understand that the Bolithos own, or owned, Kenegie House (Gulval).. I am trying to establish whether the MARTINs and BOLITHOs are in any way related...... David.

Aberystwithian 13 I missed this post, replying to my ? re Elizabeth Bolitho/William Curnow - you were too clever for me, posting it logically under Curnows...! I'm not an Ancestry subscriber, so can't access the Parrott/Heywood tree you mention. But it does look as if the James Curnow b 1818 you mention may well be the James b 1818 c. youngest brother of my GGGfather John Curnow, both born Towednack sons of William Curnow & Elizabeth Bolitho. Looking at censuses, it seems James washed his hands of Towednack - both 1871 & 1881 censuses show a declaration of birthplace as no longer Towednack but Gulval... Sue

Sue - by my reckoning you are missing to brothers to your John Curnow, both younger than James and thus negating your comment! Michael Curnow baptised 28th January 1821 Towednack s/o William and Elizabeth married Mary Amelia Edwards 9th October 1841 at St Ives and died at Daylesford, Victoria in 1883. Robert Curnow baptised 17th June 1823 Towednack s/o William and Eizabeth married Margery Curnow 30th April 1843 at St Ives Margery Curnow baptised 4th March 1823 Towednack d/o James Curnow and Dorothy BOLITHO who married at Towednack 26th October 1811. Dorothy Bolitho was baptised 2nd November 1787 at Gulval d/o James Bolitho and Mary James and so was a sister to Elizabeth as was James Curnow a brother to William. CT

Well, I did say "the James b 1818 c. youngest brother of my GGGfather John Curnow" I had information that there were the 2 further brothers, but not from original sources, and coincidentally it was on my list to verify on Towednack PR microfiches during my trip down West this last week - but I didn't get as far as I would have liked.... So: thankyou - and I am particularly pleased you confirm my 1st Australian! (I know there are many more, but I can only handle a few at a time....) Discussing Curnows last year, you said "someone came along with some fertiliser and they spread all over the place" I think it was....! I have so many to track down outside of my immediate line, that I have been a little cowardly and tended to stick for now with exploring relatives less blessed with fertiliser.... But this year I must grasp the nettle, and do more on these sideways lines of Curnows....... PS I also did not know for certain that Elizabeth Bolitho was she who was baptised 30 August 1779 in Morvah, daughter of James Bolitho - although I had never found any alternative possibilities for her - hence my question about her in October 09 - but I am now content that is she, given sister Dorothy is "born Morvah" in 1851 census. So, a 2nd Thankyou. Sue

Welcome as usual Sue! I have not looked at that lot for quite some time so quoted what is in my database but as far as I know I have given correct information. Would not hurt to venture there yourself (and myself again) to be certain but I seem to have enough information in the database to suggest it is right. I also neglected to comment on a point you made regarding the 1871 and 1881 Census where Gulval was recorded as birthplace rather than Towednack. That information might depend on who performed the task of answering the Census questions and it might also be affected by the actual location of the birthplace given that Gulval and Towednack share a border. I think sometimes that the birthplace recorded in the Census can be very much like the age! In the Eddy family I have one person who in one Census is recorded as born London yet in another as Sancreed or St Just! As for 'graspiing the nettle' you could try 'grabbing the bull by the horns' or 'biting the bullet'! CT

Sue this thread has been dormant for seven years now. And this might not be the right place but it was one with a James from about the right time.
The 1851, 1861, 1881 and 1891 censuses have a James Curnow born Towednack 1823 living in Ludgvan with a wife Elizabeth three sons James (14), Mathew (11), John (9) and Edward (3)daughter Elizabeth (2). [ ages from 1861 census]
This James never "denied" his birth village though he seems to have lived in Ludgvan his adult life.
If I have got the right guy he died 1893.
Do you know any thing of his antecedents. No doubt he ends up at Thomas (d.1643) but who lie in between?

Roger - that would be James Curnow baptized 13th April 1823 Towednack to Matthew Curnow and Mary Williams who married at Madron in 1811. This Matthew was the son of Matthew Curnow and Elizabeth Williams married Towednack 1773 with Matthew in turn being son of Thomas Curnow and his first wife Martha Curnow. Thereafter the line as I have it goes via Thomas Curnow and Margery Dyer who probably married sometime shortly before 1694 and then Thomas Curnow and Jone Painter. This Thomas son of Thomas Curnow and Jane Martin and then to Thomas and Catherin.
Back to your James Curnow - he married Elizabeth Eddy Rowe at Ludgvan in 1845 and had a total of nine children:- James (1847-1928), Elizabeth Rowe (1848-1849), Matthew (1849-1920), John (1851-1920), William Rowe (1853-1854), Edward Rowe (1857-1874), Elizabeth Mary (1859-), Zachariah Williams (1861-1863) and Reuben (1864-1872).

Hi again Roger. Since my posts of 7 years ago I have done more work on these Curnows - re-reading what I was posting back then, well, hmmmm! Yes indeed, the line for James is per CT's post according to the work I did over the years - much with CT's help! I do have a slight niggling question mark over Matthew Curnow father of James Curnow 1823, viz at the 1811 Madron marriage of Matthew Curnow to Mary Williams the witnesses were John Pearce, M Wright & Mary Curnow..... I haven't worked out quite how Mary Curnow would fit , as I would expect her to be e.g. a sister given it was still usually men who were marriage witnesses, and I have Matthew's sister Mary being buried 1782, just before Matthew was born. Yes, perhaps a cousin, or an in-law.... and yet....... I guess I need to trawl all examples of Mary Curnow signatures of the era for comparisons (I recall she signed as witness to 1811 marriage, without double-checking that right now.) Sue

Hello to all on the board,
Ranking fairly high on my dna matches through Ancestry I have an account for "mwall182" who appears to be descended from a Curnow line. I havent been able to trace this line and wonder if anyone has any input for me? Elsie Kent Munro CURNOW married Arnold WALL in New Zealand in 1901. Their son Arnold WALL was a Group Captain RAF. Elsie may have been the daughter of John Curran CURNOW (BORN "Scotland1848" = Alice Augusta MUNRO born NZ in 1855) Any help greatly appreciated, Regards Mike

Hi Mike John Curnow, teacher & educational writer, married Alice Augusta Munro daughter of Henry, a judge, 8 January 1876 St Matthew Auckland. They had a Tremayne Munro Curnow 4 May 1881 who became a vicar, & later father of the poet Thomas Allen Munro Curnow. I haven't explored NZ records for other children of John & Alice prior to John's burial 28 March 1882 age 32 death but I would expect to find a couple of children between marriage in 1876 & birth of Tremayne in 1881. Nor have I pursued the name of Alice Munro's mother - Elsie??. But the name "Munro" is highly suggestive that Elsie Kent Munro Curnow very much belongs in this family; in fact, I would be most surprised if she was not a daughter of John & Alice. Hopefully someone helpful like Lannannta could prove this from NZ records/newspaper entries. The identity of Alice Munro's husband John: Scotland 1848? I beg your pardon?!!! My research found him to be 1849 child of John Curnow 10 March 1813 St Ives & his 2nd wife Patience Nicholas Craze, who emigrated to Aus on the Lysander 1851. John, Patience & their sons get quite a few mentions in Aus & NZ newspapers over the years. Does that give you a clue how you might share some St Ives DNA with "mwall182"? Sue

The identity of Alice Munro's husband John: Scotland 1848? I beg your pardon?!!! Thank you Sue and Ian. I had trawled the internet for s short time and the suggestion was Scotland. (he could have moved from Cornwall!) Much appreciate the St' Ives info although I cant place anythong in my tree as yet. I have no recent family in that area, would probably have to steer toward Zennor. I now have several more names and locations to work on, so once again Thank you
