I am looking for dates and background to relocation of my Grandparents Lydia Berriman, Born 1886 Back Street St Ives and George Vercoe born 1891 Phillack to Durban South Africa. I believe they married in South Africa. I am a novice researcher and can't find any information about when they left. George's brother Henry Veroce left in 1912 but I am not sure from where. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thnka Jenny

Hi Jenny and Welcome to Penwith Genealogy. The 1911 Census was taken on 2nd April 1911 at which time Lydia was living at 6 Bedford Road St Ives along with her sister Nancy Jane and brother Thomas Jennings Berriman. I cannot find a marriage for Lydia in England but according to one of the online family trees on Ancestry there was a son born at Durban in 1923. There are South African records available on FamilySearch but as nothing is showing up in a general search it would seem that any records that might help have not yet been transcribed. The following link is for the baptism record of Howard George Vercoe at Durban 19th August 1923:- www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6YN9-6G4?i=411&cc=1463648&personaUrl=%2Fark%3A%2F61903%2F1%3A1%3A2MK8-TPYHopefully you can view this just by clicking the link but if not then you will need to create a free account on familysearch if you do not already have one. I have tried search a few of the South African records but the above baptism is all I have been able to find. CT

I have found the South African Archives very difficult to search and to provide copies of the information I wanted and eventually only got the information I needed through a family member I had located in SA. You can search the catalogue at www.national.archsrch.gov.za/sm300cv/smws/sm300dl but this is not straightforward since it is organised into various separate databases, each of which has to be searched separately. Sometimes, however, you can get useful information from the catalogue entry itself. For example, I found the following, which seems to be of relevance to your query, in the Pietermarizburg database by searching for 'Vercoe', as well as 6 other papers with that name in the catalogued information: DEPOT NAB SOURCE MSCE TYPE LEER SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 3853/1966 PART 1 DESCRIPTION VERCOE, LYDIA. BORN BERRIMAN. BORN IN ST. IVE'S, CORNWALL, ENGLAND. PRSP VERCOE, GEORGE FROUD. DECEASED ESTATE NO. 1365/1955. DECEASED ESTATE. STARTING 19660000 ENDING 19670000 Also a second paper in the same database seems to be of relevance, as follows: DEPOT NAB SOURCE MSCE TYPE LEER VOLUME_NO 0 SYSTEM 01 REFERENCE 1365/1955 PART 1 DESCRIPTION VERCOE, GEORGE FROUD. BORN IN ENGLAND. SSP VERCOE, LYDIA. (BORN BERRIMAN) DECEASED ESTATE. STARTING 19550000 ENDING 19550000 They would appear to be some sort of probate documents. I hope they are of interest.

Thank you CT. I will revisit my SA connections and fill in a few gaps!

Hi Roger - there is actually quite a bit of South African information available on FamilySearch now. Not everything is there of course but if you have patience and put in some time and effort it can be very worthwhile. CT

That's okay Jenny - check out those South African records and if you need more help or you have more queries just post them and we will see what we can do to help.
