I’m trying to figure out the parents of John Lanyon {A} (Bur 7/4/1664 Sancreed) who married Mary Ellis & Nan Jop.
Could he be the son of William Lanyon of Morvah who died in 1619?
William Lanyon had a son John {D} who is mentioned in his will. I can’t find a baptism for John but looking at the dates of marriage of his sisters (Margaret m. William Bosustow 24/10/1619 Morvah & an Honor Lanyon m. Stephen Thomas 27/11/1631 Helston) it suggests they were born c1590-1615 unless they were both very elderly brides! John is probably a similar age.
(William seems to have had his children late in life unless he had an earlier marriage with issue.)
There is a document in the National Archives Ref:WARD 7/58/14
Inquest PM Bodmyn 17 Sep 20 Jas 1 upon William Lanyon gent of Morvah (Court of Ward and Liveries) and John his son aged 17. (This would make his date of birth c1602.)
I haven’t seen the document but apparently it deals with John’s inheritance as he was a minor when his father died.
I also looked at who ended up with William’s property Tregaminian.
John Lanyon’s {A} 1664 will mentions the 4 horses he has at Tregaminian.
His son John Lanyon {B} Bapt 1/1/1641 Sancreed marries Mary Borlase 27/12/1661 at Morvah and several children of a John Lanyon are baptised at Morvah in the following years. He then moves to St Ives where he is Mayor.
Lysons states that the only place of note in Morvah is Tregaminian so if John Lanyon & Mary Borlase are living in Morvah where are they residing if not Tregaminian?
His eldest son John Lanyon {C} Bapt 16/10/1664 Morvah marries Frances Brydges at Trinity Church London on 14/6/1697. He’s described as a bachelor of St Ives.
John Lanyon {C} along with his father John Lanyon {B} sells Tregaminian to John Borlase of Pendeen esq. According to Lysons in Magna Britannica Cornwall.
The assignment of leases for Tregaminian are at CRO X110/4
That lists Tobias Lanyon and Samuel Ennys assigning the lease to John Borlase for 1 year in 1708 and numerous other leases.
This is probably the Tobias Lanyon who was bapt 15/5/1675 Morvah s/o John Lanyon {B}
If John Lanyon {A} who died in 1664 is not the son of William Lanyon of Morvah how did he end up with Tregaminian? What happened to William Lanyon of Morvah’s son John {D} mentioned in his will and the subject of the Inquest PM at Bodmyn?
I note there is a marriage between a John Lanyon and Ann Edwards 4/2/1625 at Morvah.
Could John Lanyon {A} have had three wives?
Ann Edwards 4/2/1625 Morvah
Nan Jop 29/10/1636 Sancreed Died 2/2/1637 Sancreed
Mary Ellis 17/2/1639 St Just
I am also trying to find the parents of John Lanyon (Lannyne) gent {E} who married Mary ? 16/11/1584 Sancreed and was buried 13/4/1634 Madron.
His will names sons: Alexander, David, and daughter Ann and children of son Francis.
I originally had John Lanyon {E} pencilled in as the son of William Lanyon of Morvah.
Hopefully someone with greater knowledge of the Lanyon family will come back and shoot me down and give me a better answer!
Fingers crossed!
