Hi, I was directed here by someone on the St. Ives Facebook page. I have been doing my tree for some time now but have only just started on my 3 x great grandmothers side Mary Trewhella b.1784. She married John Major b.1786 in 1806 and had 3 children to him Mary, John and Francis. After John’s death in 1811 she remarried to Richard Stevens b.1786 in 1812 and I believe had 4 children to him. i have a copy of the history of St. Ives, Lelant, Towednack and Zennor and I’m slowly piecing together the clues in there. i have entered names (but not confirmed them all yet) up to Martin Trewhella b.1696 where I have found a DNA match. got a lot of studying to do whilst in lockdown.

Hi hulljon and Welcome to Penwith Genealogy. If Mary Trewhella is an ancestor of yours then you are most certainly a cousin of mine. I presume you must be descended from her son Francis Major given son John died at the age of 2 and I have absolutely no knowledge at all of a daughter to John and Mary Major. I have searched my records again I can find no record anywhere of daughter Mary so if you have anything that might shed some light it would be welcome. Mary Trewhella was the daughter of Christopher Trewhella and Jane Michell and granddaughter of Martin Trewhella and his wife Catherine Baragwanath. I am descended from Christopher Trewhella's brother William who married Ann Cockat Towednack in 1767. I am very interested in your comment about a DNA match. I did the Ancestry test a few years back and have now done the Family Tree DNA Y-Chromosome test but unfortunately I have not yet been able to 'get a handle' on how it all works. I have thousands of 'matches' but have only ever found about 8 where I can recognize any possible connection. Perhaps you might be the catalyst that finally unlocks things for me! Without going into details or divulging sensitive material could you tell me where you tested and on what sites you have placed your data? I am on Ancestry, FTDNA and MyHeritage as well as GEDMatch. To keep any sensitive information private you can contact me via the Private Message facility here otherwise we could use email. If you would prefer to use email then let me know but please don't post your email address online. If email is preferred just post a message here - as Administrator of the site I will be able to get a message to you with my email address. CT

Hi Cornish Terrier Thank you very much for your speedy reply. E-mail would be perfect if you wish to do that. You’re right. I don’t know why I added Mary Major, that Mary is on a different line but shows next to Francis & John. One thing I have found though is a Mary Major born in 1812 to parents John & Mary, I know John died in 1811 but it was November so it’s possible Mary was pregnant before he died, I’ve marked this to look into further. Aha! - on checking OPC records and then my database again I see that you are right about Mary Major baptized in 1812. However, she is nothing to do with John Major and Mary Trewhella at St Ives. And you are also correct that the parents were John and Mary. However, Mary was baptized at Penzance and although her father John Major was from St Ives it was not the same family. This particular John Major was baptized at St Ives in 1782 to John Major, a tallow chandler, and his wife Elizabeth (nee Hocking). The younger John had been first married at Helston in 1804 to Ann James who was buried at Penzance in 1810. John remarried at Redruth later in 1810 to Mary Teague and hence the baptism of young Mary at Penzance in 1812. I'm about to head off to get some sleep but before doing so will send an email so you will have my address. CT
