Hi New to geneology and have just started creating our family tree and have gotten as far back as 1610, with nearly all born in Gwennap, Cornwall....
Here's where I've drawn a blank:
William Jose - Born Circa 1610 - father of 'Jose' (circa 1640) and Christopher Jose 'Jose' is father of Richard Jose born 1670 in Cornwall
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, the family story goes that our ancestors arrived here in England after being ship wrecked off the coast of Cornwall - Spanish Armada 1588 - is Jose a spanish name! was Williams father on one of those ships! These are just two questions I'm trying to get answers too.
Thank you in advance
Christine

Hi Christine
Nothing like a good family story... I heard the same and such shipwrecks were the reason for dark hair, olive skin etc.... however the Armada was wrecked more on the Irish coast and the survivors pretty much butchered once they arrived on land .... as opposed to being welcomed with open arms and then being offered your eldest daughter haha

According to 'A Handbook of Cornish Surnames' by G. Pawley White:-
JOSE - Romano-Celtic surname, borrowed from Latin Joseus during Roman occupation. Well known in 14th century.
