My family legend has it that my paternal line came from Cornwall.
The furtherest I can trace my father's line is, my great-grandfather who was, William Henry Carter. He married a Betsy Faulkner. Their son (I don't know how many children there were) was my grandfather, Albert Edward Carter born in 1901. From that date, I imagine William Henry and Betsy would have been born somewhere in the 1860's to 1880's.
However, it is quite possible that the family had already moved to South Africa in the period before Albert Edward was born.
My father passed away in the last century and I'm so sorry I didn't get to pick his brain more about my ancestry. My memory, if it serves me, is of him talking of his family coming from St. Ives and/or Looe.
It would be great to make contact with anyone who has these same two people in their own ancestry.
I live in Knysna in South Africa. My father was born in Uitenhage in South Africa. It is quite possible that his father, was also born here in South Africa.
I will be travelling to Cornwall in the early part of July this year as part of a nostalgic journey to find out where I come from.

Hi Cheryl and Welcome to the site. I have had a quick check of the GRO Indexes and it appears your family must have been in South Africa prior to the marriage of William Henry Carter and Betsy Faulkner. There is no sign of that marriage in the index and likewise no sign of a birth for Albert Edward Carter. I should qualify this by saying there 63 Albert Edward Carter births indexed between 1899 and 1903 in various parts of England but there are none where the mother's maiden name was Faulkner or any variant of Faulkner. That certainly suggests you need to go back at least one generation to find the Cornish link. But I have found something in another source that might be a starting point. I don't know if you subscribe to Ancestry at all but in their Public Member Trees I found a couple of people with what appears to be your William Henry Carter. There is no mention of Cornwall and in fact these people show that William was born in Cambridgeshire to another William Henry Carter. If your father mentioned possible links to St Ives in Cornwall then it is entirely possible that the owners of these family trees might have made errors but only some personal research would be able to solve that little problem. I would suggest you begin with the information that is the most likely to be accurate and research it yourself. There is no source quoted for this information but according to these records the marriage of William Henry Carter and Bessie Faulkner took place in Capetown 20th October 1897. If a copy of that marriage record can be found and the information verified then it is possible the record might contain more information that could be helpful. Best thing would be for you to try and track down a copy of this marriage record and hope that it includes some information about the origins and parentage of William and Bessie. And also try to find out as much detail as you can about your grandfather and any siblings he might have had. The more information you can find the better. CT
