Does anyone know anything about this site (cornwallinscriptions.co.uk) or what happened to it? While going through some of my multitudes of folders of bits and pieces I came across a .pdf file that I found back in 2010. The file itself is titled 'Obituary_.PDF' and seems to be an index to obituaries of Cornish people dating back to at least 1840. These deaths occurred in many places including Cuba, Jamaica, Russia, Australia, USA, New Zealand, Wales and England. Of particular interest to me is an item about a Thomas TREWHELLA who apparently died in Australia in August 1853:- Register - 600 Country - AUSTRALIA Ref. - 1854.03 Death Date - 21/08/1853 Surname - TREWHELLA First Name - Thomas I have two problems - firstly I am not yet able to identify who this Thomas Trewhella might be and secondly, more importantly at the moment, I cannot find this item again and the link seems to be non-existent. The only other thing I have found is a possible reference to GENUKI but I can find nothing about this item on that site either. If anyone knows anything that might help or can offer any suggestions it would be very much appreciated. Perhaps someone with access to newspaper sites that I don't have might be able to have a hunt to see if any reference to Thomas Trewhella can be found. I have (hopefully) attached a copy of the document as there are many names of potential interest to other members. CT Obituary_.PDF.pdf (63.54 KB)

CT Hi CT The site is found on Wayback Machine, but doesn't appear to have been updated from about 2003 web.archive.org/web/20030621100407/http://cornwallinscriptions.co.uk:80/index.htmlIt would seem to have been set up by Michael Kiernan, who then went on to set up Cornish Global Migration Programme. They have an placeholder page at cornishmigration.org/There is an email contact on the page The Murdoch House page on the visit Redruth site gives a bit more info, including a note about a database of Cornish emigrants and phone contact details www.visitredruth.co.uk/Murdoch_House_3144.aspxSimon

Thanks Simon - after a quick check of everything it would seem that the most likely place I might find further information about the entry I want would be via the local Cornish newspapers. As part of Rootsweb the West Briton site is still unavailable but I don't think the obituary for Thomas was carried by that paper or I should have found it previously. That means that I need to ask the help of someone with access to the Royal Cornwall Gazette and The Cornishman as I would think they are the most likely to have what I am after. But if Thomas did die in Australia then I am curious to why I cannot find a record in any of the Aussie death indexes. The date of death for Thomas was 21st August 1853 but the closest I can find is a Thomas KINSELLA who I think died a couple of weeks earlier. Is it possible that the Obit should actually be for this man? CT

Can't find anything in the Royal Cornwall Gazette. The only Thomas Trewhella mentioned was "an old man" who was quoted in a murder trial in early 1854. The victim was Phillipa Holman and was "Old Tom's"sister. He was not called as a witness for the prosecution, although seen in Bodmin, as he might have supported the accused, James Holman. I don't think the Cornishman was published until later. Unfortunately the report is only part of the proceedings I shall have to find out what happened now!

Thankyou to both Londoner and Zibetha - I already had a little detail about the murder of Philippa Holman as her husband's sister Elizabeth was the wife of Thomas Trewhella. But this Thomas was born at St Erth in 1792 and lived until 1878 when he died at Crowan. So far I have been unable to find anything that remotely resembles what I am looking for and, given the initial information, I find that extremely surprising. Perhaps the more curious thing is that I simply do not have a Thomas Trewhella (of any spelling) in my database who could have been the subject of the Obituary. I do have one Thomas Trewhella who initially could have been considered a possibility. He was baptized at St Erth in 1807 and I have a record stating he sailed for Mexico in December 1841. I have no death or burial for this Thomas but he was certainly still alive after 1854 as he appears in the 1861 Census at Chelsea in London with his wife and daughter Mary Elizabeth who was born about the time he left for Mexico. I suspect there may be an error with that obituary but I need to track it down before I can be sure. CT

I have nothing to add re: "Old Tom" Trewhella" himself, but I was working through some new DNA matches with a cousin this week that led me back to my tree containing a note from the Royal Cornwall Gazette that my 3x-great grandfather, Henry Semmons, sat on the jury for James Holman's trial.
John's wife Prudence was the former Prudence Parkin, and Old Tom's wife would then have been Elizabeth Parkin. The women's father was John Parkin, and his wife was named Margaret. I have some worksheets in progress re: Holman family branches in the Crowan area, and I had pencilled in that John Holman may have been the son of John Holman and Elizabeth Pollard.
It appears John Holman was abroad at the time of the 1851 Census.

Not sure ..... but I think you may have gotten things a little confused here Zib! Who is this John with wife Prudence Parkin? I rather suspect that you mean 'James' (as in James Holman) and his wife 'Philippa' who was the daughter of John Perkin and Margaret Pascoe. And as 'brother-in-law' Thomas Trewhella was actually the brother-in-law of James Holman having married James' sister Elizabeth Holman (1798-1865) at Crowan 16th October 1847. CT

I am not as confused as it seems, but my errors are definitely posted. I think it better to continue than to attempt to revise my previous post! The building where I live is under extensive exterior repairs, and we have a heat wave going on. I stayed up all night waiting to open doors and windows hoping to clear chemical fumes once the weather cooled down. You read my clouded mind re: the names you clarified above. I found the info that "confused" me about Philippa --- from this I had a sister, Elizabeth for her. lists.rootsweb.ancestry.com/hyperkitty/list/cornish-gen@rootsweb.com/thread/JJQYS7WO4D3AD44JGKDLKRWKKZDO4JFY/ Also I had found that Philippa and James both had fathers named John. AHHH! The fumes! Conjures up images of the 60s and flower power. If this is the John Holman who married Martha Ingram and was the father of James and father-in-law of Tom Trewhella then I have him baptized at Gwinear 15th September 1776 son of John Holman and Elizabeth Hammill. CT
