Ethel’s father William James Curnow 1855 (he son of Henry Curnow 1820 Phillack & Mary Ley) died June Q 1884 West Ham RD age 29, leaving a widow Maud & 2 girls, Maud & Ethel.
By 1901 both the 2 Mauds and Ethel can be found in separate households in the Fulham/Chelsea area, occupation domestic service.
1904 Ethel marries Albert Bowler in the Fulham RD, and by 1911 they have 4 children, Rosalin, Florence, Francis & Albert. In September Q 1913 a further child Susan comes along.
But, my intial quick search for a marriage for Ethel had 1st lighted on that in FBMD of June Q 1920 St George Hanover Sq London to Auguste Voegeti. It was then that against this 1920 marriage entry I noticed that FBMD had Ethel L Curnow as “or Ethel L Bowler” or “Ethel L Ortelli”. Entirely feasible to have more than one previous marriage I thought, specially with it being the time of WW1.
The 1st marriage to Albert Bowler is 1904 per above, producing 5 children; 3rd marriage 1920 to Auguste Voegeti.
2nd apparent marriage to Ortelli is the one that has me bemused, as the only marriage I find of an Ortelli to an Ethel is Dec Q 1913 Pancras RD (close to Fulham where Ethel lived): John E Ortelli to Ethel Mitchell.
John Edward Ortelli can be found in London 1911 with his widowed mother Amelia. John Ortelli died at Ypres 1917, his memorial at Commonwealth Graves Commission naming his parents as Joseph & Amelia of Kentish Town, and referring to “his late wife Ethel”.
There is indeed a death of an Ethel Ortelli Huntingdon RD (60 miles north of London) in the September Q of 1914 – same Q as birth of Queenie Ortelli, mother’s maiden name Mitchell.
There are not many John Edward Ortellis, nor many Ethel L Curnows around this time in England. Hmmm.
So at the moment I think I am seeing Ethel married mother of 4 children plus a newborn baby marrying shop assistant John Ortelli late 1913 under the false name of Ethel Mitchell (presumably bigamously as I haven't found a suitable death for postman Albert Bowler), 9 months later in 1914 a child is born to John & Ethel up in Huntingdon where Ethel’s death is faked??? Ethel presumably runs off (again) somewhere, then post WW1 when she knows 2nd husband John Ortelli has died, she marries August Voegeti in London 1920 – leaving a trail of evidence by giving her previous married names which are recorded in the London marriage register.
Seems bizarre, I must be missing some more mundane explanation!
