Good morning
I have sorted out a box of unknown Quick family members that I would like to bring up one at a time for a review.
The first is William Thomas Quick, buried at Barnoon in October 1959 aged 81. On the same headstone is his wife Veletta who died in 1960 aged 64 years.
I am pretty sure that his wife was Veletta Curnow who was born in the March quarter of 1896.
However, I cannot find a marriage with the limited facilities I have at my disposal.
Does anyone have this couple in their database?

I don't have the details of this headstone so if you have a photo of it a copy would be appreciated. However, I can help with the other information you are looking for. William Thomas Quick was born at Towednack 3rd September 1877 son of Christopher Quick and Mary Bennetts. He was baptized at Towednack 29th January 1886 'son of Christopher and Mary Quick of Greenbank, miner'. Valetta Curnow was born at St Ives 15th March 1896 and baptized at St Ives 10th August 1900 'daughter of John and Jane Hollow Curnow of Westcott's Quay, mariner'. Her parents were John Curnow and Jane Williams who married in the Penzance R.D. in 1877. William Thomas Quick, widower, and Valetta Curnow, spinster, were married at Manhattan, New York, 3rd January 1927 I am yet to find the first marriage for William. CT

Good evening
Thank you very much for that.. New York explains why I could not find anything.
Is it possible William Thomas was born in 1878? This is the year he appears in FreeBMD while the OPC database has his birth at 1880.
I do not have a photo I am sorry. I was referring to the entry from the West Penwith Resources - Barnoon Monumental Inscriptions.
Thomas and Valetta also appear in the 1939 householders census but I do not have access to the images.
Thomas married Emily Daniel Andrews in 1914 at St Ives so I would guess that Emily died in the USA??

Yes, it is possible he is the one registered in the September Qtr of 1878. The baptism record gives the date of baptism as 29th January 1886 and says that he was born 3rd September 1880 however the 1881 Census shows that William Thomas Quick was then age 3 so I had deduced his birth at September 1877. However, there was another William Thomas Quick born at Marazion in August 1877 and baptized 30th December 1877. This William was buried at Marazion 23rd July 1878 age 11 months so he cannot possibly have been born in the September Qtr of 1878. Yes, on reflection and after studying both of the above it appears that the husband of Valetta must indeed have been born in 1878. - I thought we were talking about WILLIAM Thomas Quick? I realise that William Thomas could appear as William or could even possibly appear as Thomas from time to time but I suspect this is actually a Thomas Quick and a totally different person. It also looks like Thomas and Emily had a son born in Wales a few months after they were married. FreeBMD shows six Quick births from 1911 to 1922 where the mother's maiden name was Andrews. Of those I know that five belonged to James Alfred Quick and his wife Jane Polmear Andrews and their son James Alfred was born in the June Qtr of 1914. In fact he was born at St Ives 30th March 1914 and baptized 28th August 1918. Another child was born in the September Qtr of 1914 at Swansea with the name Charles D Quick and I would hazard a guess that the middle initial stands for 'Daniel'. Once again the marriage record is probably required to settle this for certain but I do think Thomas Quick was most likely a totally different person. Also, I have not found William Thomas Quick in the 1901 or 1911 UK Census so it is possible his first marriage was somewhere other than in England. CT

For what it is worth, the details of Thomas and Valetta on the 1939 Register are:
RESIDENCE: 3 Kelleys Gardens, St Ives M.B., Cornwall, England NAME(S) DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS Valetta Quick 15 Mar 1876 Female Unpaid Domestic Duties Married Thomas Quick 23 Jul 1878 Male General Labourer Married

Hello again It stands for Dennis. The GRO site has baptisms up to 1916 with full names and mothers maiden names.
I have an old blurry image sent to me from Corinne which shows Emily Quick, wife, of Baileys Lane, St Ives, mother Mrs Andrews, arriving in US from Canada in October 1914.

Well, you know I love it when Michigan is involved in the story. William Thomas' name is crossed out on a ship's manifest for the Carmania in 1920. In 1925, he was listed on the passenger list of the Olympia with his nearest relative = J. Quick of St Ives, and William was born in "Towedreek" per the typed ship's manifest. I do find William and Valet(t)a in Flint, Michigan city directories (about 65 miles from Detroit) where he was an autoworker in 1927, 1929 (as "Thomas") 1931 and 1932 mostly residing on Poplar Street. So they to went back to Cornwall?

Good research Zibetha, I doff my hat in your direction I've had a look at the 1939 register for Trinklady and although Valetta Quick's birth date is transcribed as 15 March 1878, the 7 of the birth year is ambiguous. It could be a 7 or a 9. It looks like the enumerator has hesitated or recorded the numeral in a non-committal fashion. It doesn't resemble the clear numeral sevens given in other entries. Also on the same page just above Thomas and Valetta Quick are entries for several Curnows. Living at the 'Barber Shop', St Ives is, J.H. Curnow, Widow, Female, 23 Aug 1855, Unpaid Domestic Duties. S.C. Curnow, Single, Female, 29 Jan 1889, Unpaid Domestic Duties. Another person also in the household, but the entry is still redacted. The next household is 1 Kelleys (or Kellys) Gardens, Thomas C. Curnow, Married, Male, 2 Apr 1891, Master Hairdresser. Elizabeth H. (or M?) Curnow, Married, Female, 7 Jun 1891, Unpaid Domestic Duties. Two further entries are in this household, but again these are still redacted. Then at 2 Kellys Gardens are 3 single ladies, and one redacted entry. Then the Quicks at no.3, with no redacted entries, so it's just the two of them in the household. I would hazard a guess (I haven't had a chance to verify with research) that J.H. Curnow is Valetta's mother and Thomas C Curnow is a brother.

Excellent!! I bit of conversation to and fro has managed to draw out several pieces of previously unknown information which now seems to have resulted in a solution. Gandolf - obviously you have access to this register so I wonder if you could see if there is an entry for John Quick, brother of William Thomas Quick. John died in 1949 at which time he was living at Back Road East in St Ives. What I am interested in is the birthdate recorded for John as I suspect the dates of birth recorded for he and his brother might have been a little mixed up in the baptism register. The birthdate for William Thomas was 3rd September yet in the 1939 Register it is 23rd July. John's birthdate as recorded at baptism was 3rd July (1881) and I now wonder if perhaps this might also be incorrect. The birth years recorded at baptism were also incorrect in both cases - William (1880) was actually born in 1878 whilst John (1881) was born in 1880. Yes, it finally occurred to me to check the GRO Index which confirms his birth was registered in the September Qtr of 1878 - mother's maiden name Bennetts. The information from the 1939 Register as well as the information from the Ancestry Collection 'U.S., Border Crossings from Canada to U.S., 1825-1960' does confirm that William Thomas Quick married Emily Daniel Andrews in 1914 and that he was recorded as 'Thomas Quick' at the time. Hopefully the following link will allow you to see the Border Crossing document for yourself:- www.ancestry.com.au/interactive/1075/m1464_269-0178/3166497?backurl=http%3a%2f%2fsearch.ancestry.com.au%2fcgi-bin%2fsse.dll%3fdb%3dCanadianBC%26gss%3dsfs28_ms_db%26new%3d1%26rank%3d1%26msT%3d1%26gsfn%3demily%26gsfn_x%3d0%26gsln%3dquick%26gsln_x%3d0%26MSAV%3d1%26uidh%3d601&backlabel=ReturnSearchResultsValetta Curnow was born in 1896 and her birthdate recorded as 15th March 1896 when she was baptized at St Ives 10th August 1900. Valetta's mother was born Jane Hollow so you are likely correct with that identification. She also had a brother Thomas born in 1890 but I have not seen him with a middle initial/name before. CT

Yes CT, I do have access to the 1939 Register - can be quite useful at times. I believe the following is the household you are interested in - details as transcribed (including errors).
Quick Household (4 People) 28 Back Road West , St Ives M.B., Cornwall, England FIRST NAME(S) LAST NAME(S) DOB SEX OCCUPATION MARITAL STATUS John Quick 03 Sep 1880 Male Mineral Water Carrier - Catherine Quick 29 Sep 1880 Female Domestic Duties Unpaid Married Elizabeth Date 08 May 1882 Female Domestic Duties Unpaid Married Evelina Tucker 29 Sep 1846 Female Domestic Duties Unpaid Married
NOTE: despite being listed as married, Elizabeth Date and Evelina Tucker are actually widows when you look at the original. Also as you would expect John Quick is listed as married.
It would seem that your suspicions are correct CT - the minister has managed to reverse the birth dates of the two boys when he was recording their baptisms.

There is a divorce record (No. 10715) for Emily and "Thomas" Quick. She filed in Genessee County, Michigan Circuit Court on April 5, 1922 and the divorce was finalized June 10th. Grounds were "Extreme Cruelty" which was a commonly used reason at the time. There were no children, and the original marriage was March 1914 at St. Ives, Cornwall, England.

Gandolf - yes, that is the household of interest and it shows that my theory about birthdates was correct. The date of birth shown here for John Quick is the date given for brother William when he was baptized. And when John was baptized his birthdate, as I think I previously mentioned, was given as 3rd July 1881. As the dates in the 1939 Register were probably given by the men themselves I would hope they might be a little more accurate so I will add those to my database. Zib - thankyou very much for the final piece of the puzzle! I now have a copy of the Divorce record from Ancestry. Well, almost the final piece - I guess it would be handy to know what happened to Emily after the divorce. CT

I have found out, CT, that Emily had a sister, Catherine/Katie wife of John Coles Berryman. Another sister, Ethel, married a Soloman (Silas--- I knew that CT -- had Emily's husband #2's name on the brain) Thomas, and they resided with Katie's family in 1930. I also found a passenger record for Ethel travelling from Australia to California with final destination Detroit, Michigan and her contact being a brother-in-law- Mr. Solomon. He was Emily's second husband, Philip Solomon per her Michigan death certificate. Ethel must have returned to Cornwall as she married there. I am still digging into this, but the fun part, is that I found one family tree listing Emily, and it relates to my Williams of Ludgvan line (by marriage) Emily's brother, Charles, married Susan Uren who was the daughter of William Uren and Grace Jennings. I have father/son cousin DNA matches on Grace's line. And a an Aussie cousin with a great tree. Z

Emily died March 29, 1927 in Highland Park, Michigan about two months after her daughter, Corene Phylis, who died at age 6 months.
