Greetings,
My grandfather, Percival Hicks, was born in Cornwall. Their home, before leaving for the United States, was in St. Erth. From the research I have done, his parents, Thomas and Mary, were from the same area as were preceding generations.
I'll be visiting the area for a couple of weeks in the latter part of June and if possible, would very much appreciate any information to further my research once there.
Thank you so much!

Hi and Welcome to the site. I think we may need you to elaborate a little on what you know about the family prior to emigration. Based on the little you have told us I have done some searching but I cannot be at all sure that I have located the correct family without further details from yourself. What I have so far is that your grandfather is probably the PERCY HICKS registered in the Penzance District in 1894. I found him in the 1901 Census with several siblings of whom the eldest was Margaret who was then age 21. The other siblings in the household at that time were brother Thomas age 20 and sister Emily Jane age 11. Using this information I searched the 1891 Census and found the following at Lower Tremelling, St Erth:- Thomas Hicks age 40, farmer, born Lelant Agnes M Hicks age 32, born Crowan Thomas Hicks age 10, born St Erth Margaret Hicks age 11, born St Erth Edward Hicks age 9, born St Erth Samuel Hicks age 7, born St Erth John Hicks age 5, born St Erth Agnes Hicks age 3, born St Erth Janie Hicks age 2, born St Erth (this is Emily Jane in 1901) Temple Hicks age 8 months, born St Erth FreeBMD shows that a Thomas Hicks married Agnes Mary Reed in 1877 so I am presuming at this stage that this might be your Thomas and Mary. If you can add details that will help clarify if I am on the right track then it should not be to difficult to help you find further information that will be useful when you visit Cornwall. CT

On further investigation I have found something that may be interesting for you! If the information I included in my previous post is correct and is the connection to your Percival then I do actually have this family in my database. Furthermore, I can tell you that there is a direct line back to one of my Trewhella families via Thomas Trewhella Hicks who was born at Ludgvan in 1815! If you searched this yourself you might find some anomilies in the 1871 Census that would cause you uncertainties. In that Census Thomas Hicks (father of Percival) and his siblings were incorrectly recorded as being two or three years younger than they actually were. Thomas was recorded in that Census as age 23 when in fact he would have been age 27 or 28. CT

I've just realised the people I mentioned above didn't leave the country!
My great grandfather however, William Hicks B 1858, had a brother named Thomas Hicks B 1843 in Lelant who married an Agnes Mary Reed. They both moved to Minnesota at some point between 1901 and 1910 along with a child named Percival B 1895
I've not looked very far into this yet, but i have this saved as a possibility of being the same Percival from military records

Thomas and Agnes Mary Hicks along with children Margaret, Thomas, Edward, Samuel, John, Agnes Mary, Emily Jane, Henry Temple, Frederick, and Percival arrived in New York on the SS Philadelphia April 23, 1905. Their US contact was Agnes's brother, Charles C Reed, who was already living in Raymond, Minnesota.

Hi, Judith, I am an Ancestry subscriber and found it there. I am working on my Trewhela line (one of my 4th great-grandmothers was Ann Trewhela Harvey) which may connect to this one. I do have a DNA match to this branch that at this point is unique. By coincidence, I currently live in Minnesota Zib

This particular branch of the REED family relates to a thread here re: the Cornish in West Cork, as Agnes Mary Reed Hicks' ancestors were mine captains. I have not found a link to my known Reed relatives.

I think/hope this is "Templar's" family. What do you want to research on your trip, Templar? Wish I could go with you. Don't be shy--- we are all trying to fill in the gaps re: our family history. It does "take a village" to get the job done!

I am now wondering if you and I have a DNA match, my 4th great-grandmother was also a Trewhella. What is your ancestry ID? Agnes mary reed hicks married my 3rd great-uncle

It is "zibetha" (I am private but not hiding and would love to hear from any of you who match me) and "zjane" on gedmatch. I share that because I don't expect anyone would want to clone me.
Zib
PS-- It would be great if we have a match!
