On 20 Jun 1849, the Bastian family arrived at Port Adelaide aboard the Barque Florentia. I have been able to discover details of all members of the family except for Joseph, who is shown on the passenger list as being 6 years of age, thus being born around 1843. (Darn, too late for the 1841 census).
His parents were Henry Bastian (1800-1858) and Ann Northey (1803-1871) who were married in Kea on 10 Feb 1827. The siblings either side of Joseph were:-
Alfred, b. 24 Sep 1839 and bp. on the Truro NC circuit, 22 Mar 1840 and shown on the passenger list as aged 8 yrs. - He married Elizabeth Ann Johns in 1865 in Kapunda and died in 1918 in Booleroo Centre. Alfred appears as aged 1 year in the 1841 census.
Joseph's younger sibling was Caroline, bp. 31 Jul 1844 in Chacewater, and shown on the passenger list as aged 4 yrs. - She married Joseph Verran in Kapunda in 1861 and died in Moonta in 1893 after (or because of) having 13 children.
But of Joseph, I can find no record except his entry on the passenger list in 1849, aged 6 yrs. I can find no subsequent records in South Australia, and the rest of his family stay in S.A. so he would have been too young to move to another State, at least for at least another 10 years or so. No marriage records and no death records. A website called OneGreatFamily.com purports to have birth and death dates, but I'm not familiar with the site, although the details of parents and siblings seems correct. FamilySearch shows a baptism on 13 May 1842 and a death on 23 Dec. 1851 (age 9 yrs?) at Kapunda, but without any verification and I can find no such evidence myself.
Could anybody interested in the Bastian (Bastion) lines cast any light on this person for me? He's not in my direct line, he would be a 4th great-uncle, so I suppose the details are not essential, it would just help to fill a hole.
Thanks, Mike
