I am trying – and failing  - to find a marriage for William Curnow c1873 Sithney son of Robert Matthews Curnow 1846 & Harriet Rogers. 1891 Wm is with widowed mother Harriet in Helston as an outfitter's apprentice. 1901 he is an outfitter's assistant in Penzance, with a wife Susan born c1872 Truro, and sons Frank 4 & Arthur 3 both born Penzance. (I've looked at the William Cliff age 70 visitor; I haven't yet found any clues from him that might help.) 1911 the family are still in Penzance (different address), with the addition of Ethel age 4 born Penzance - & Frank's birthplace now showing as Torquay. The marriage has been in place 15 years. On Freebmd I find no marriage for a William Curnow to a Susan; and 1895/96 I can account for the marriage of William James Curnow to Ruth James Rowe Plympton RD Mar Q 1895 as being a cousins' marriage of William Curnow born 1876 New Jersey to William Curnow & Lavinia Boase the marriage of William Curnow to Sarah Curnow Mar Q 1896 Penzance RD as being the widower of Lavinia Boase and the marriage of William John Curnow to Georgina Richards Mar Q 1896 Helston RD as the couple at Perran Downs in 1901/1911. So, I then looked for any Susans born Truro c1872 in the 1891 census, and found 6 – and quite liked the look of Susan Trewartha as her father Henry was manager of an outfitter's shop! She would be Susan Jane baptized 16 Jan 1871 Truro to Henry Trewartha & Prudence Trevethick. Could I find any marriage for a Sus* Trewartha (variant*)? To anyone? Not really. | am stumped - an 1890s marriage should not be so hard to find!  Clearly I am missing something...... Sue |

I just spent more than an hour trying to find a possible answer and then lost the damned lot inexplicably!!!!!  Bottom line is that I have not found an answer but I have a couple of suggestions. 1. 'Frank' Curnow is most likely William Frank Curnow whose birth is registered in the March Qtr of 1896 Newton Abbott R.D. Not sure about 1896 but certainly a little later Torquay was part of the Newton Abbott R.D. In any case it appears Torquay is in the general vicinity. And this appears to be the only Frank/Francis Curnow registered in 1896 and 1897. (Without checking all the possible variations of the surname!!) 2. The marriage probably cannot be found because the groom's name either did not appear in the original St Catherine's House index or has not been transcribed by FreeBMD. If it has bee transcribed then the name has been transcribed incorrectly but after checking 1895 and 1896 I lean towards 'not transcribed'. Searching all marriages in Devon and Cornwall for 1895 and the March Qtr of 1896 for anyone named Susan/Susanna(h)/Susie etc. might be the only way to track it down but that is not a small task. You might narrow the field down to the Penzance, Helston and Truro Registration Districts in Cornwall and possibly checking only Newton Abbott in Devon but ............... CT |

William Curnow~Harriet Rogers of the 1880 marriage are the Curnow farmer/gardeners at Trungle, Paul, and unconnected to the family I am looking at. The FBMD 1890 marriage: Marriages Dec Q 1890: Curnow William John Redruth 5c 394 Richards Susan Truscott Johanna Williams Alfred..........: 1891 Alfred Williams 27 with wife Susan 28 can be found in Cambourne; 1891 Wm John Curnow can be found with his Truscott in-laws also at Cambourne. So these are not the marriages I seek.... CT: thanks for the son Frank, I hadn't yet tracked him down.... (& isn't losing all your workings a b%*!%*!)..... So, your thinking kind of fits in with the conclusion I was coming to, one of those elsuive missing grooms ...... Tracking down the Susan variants (at least I know what they all are!  ) married in the West Country 1895/early 1896 is my task for today then............ Sue |

I have searched Susan/Susies etc etc. born Truro 1871+/- 5 years, Susan/Susie etc. marriages, all Trewartha variant marriages around the 1895/96 point, to any spouse whatsoever or none, till I'm blue in the face! I have concluded that this couple hopped on a ship abroad for a wee while, even as an outfitter, then returned to England post a foreign wedding! I had found an 1891 census Susan A White candidate born Truro who was an option, as she was at that time living in the Newton Abbott area with parents Joseph sawyer & Elizabeth. However, with a baptism 13 July 1868 Truro I think she's out of the equation. So, my favoured candidate Susan J Trewartha baptized 1871 (favourite because her father was manager of an outfitter's) is not visible in 1901; her sister Julia 1901 might be in Aylesbury Bucks; her sister Emma S had died 1883 Truro age 16; her brother William will be the burial 24 April 1879 Kenwyn of Frances Street [1881 census address] age 15); mother Prudence buried 1885 Kenwyn; father Henry Messer buried 24 May 1898 Kenwyn; her oldest brother Henry E is in the Redruth RD 1901; 1901 her brother John A Trewartha is in the newton Abbott RD at Wolborough Devon, 9 miles inland from Torquay where William Frank Curnow was apparently born.......I don't think it's worth spending any more time on this. If you do, Sue, I think you may want to eliminate Susan Trewartha as a candidate for the "Susie" you seek. I don't know where she was in 1901, but on the Census in 1911, Susan Trewartha, age 40, born Truro, and single, was employed as a "Nurse Domestic" in the household of Annette Martha Diana Chafey, 65, and Mary Ann Elizabeth Halliwell,70, in Holdenhurst, Hampshire, England. RG14, Piece 5817, schedule/household no. 166.
A Susan Jane Trewartha born about 1869, spinster, died in Oxford on Nov 24, 1952 according to the National Probate Calendar. Same woman?
It is also possible that "Susie" (Curnow) was known by her middle name. Then you would be looking for a needle in haystack!

Well, THANKYOU Zib! I don't have access at home to 1911 except for Curnows (long story) . Yes, that will indeed be the Susan Jane Trewartha I had in the frame - clearly now incorrectly!! Susan wasn't actually a big name in the West Country in the 1870s (unlike when I was born, couldn't have been commoner, sorry, more popular!), so I shouldn't be having this much trouble finding Wm Curnow's wife.... I'll be needing to relook at al my possibilities then.... Sue |

Practice researching queries here (and waiting for the responses of the "experts") has helped me fine-tune my own process. As an aside, I am aware of two William Cliffs in the Crowan/Helston area. I think that the visitor in William and Susie's household in 1901 was William's uncle by marriage. William Cliff baptized 1831 in Helston (son of William Cliff and Ursula Treloar) married Elizabeth Rogers 1832, the older sister of Harriet Rogers who married Robert Matthews Curnow. Unfortunately, if I am correct, this offers no help in identifying "Susie."

I would agree re the likely identity of William Cliff, visitor 1901. I was a bit distracted when looking at this Susan problem, and let myself be lulled into that old trap of an easy/"obvious" solution - and I should have known better! Tch tch Sue!  I usually go for an exhaustive elimination of/accounting for all possible candidates, but only did a partial job of that here, so I will go back to school and do just that, but not today - off to the metropolis to peruse some newly unearthed old photos/documents with my aunt. Ta-dah!! For the Susan who was this Wm Curnow's spouse, one option was Well, searching British Newspapers Online Indexes for Arthur Curnow (son, also Wm's brother & nephew), blow me down but I find The Cornishman 29 May 1918 has (As in, this is William Curnow's funeral, husband of Susie.) Susan was 12 in 1881 census where both brothers James & Joseph are still at home; 22 in 1891 census in Newton Abbott RD Devon – so why 29 in 1901, & 39 in 1911? I guess being a few years older than your husband she decided was unacceptable.......  The clue was always there in the birth of 1st son down in Newton Abbott RD...... (Should have listened to the chap from Ockham... ) Still haven't found a likely marriage entry circa 1895/6, even for just a viable Ms S White/Whyte, but an identity is Good!!  Sue |

Good work Sue - having an identity is at least one step closer but still frustrating that the actual marriage cannot be found. And I wonder now if perhaps somewhere like South Africa might come into the equation.  I should think if this marriage occurred in the US we would find something somewhere - even in Ancestry Family Trees but there is nothing. Likewise I should have found it if it took place in Australia given I spent quite some time a while back sorting through the Australian Curnows. I think I also checked New Zealand at that time so that is another option removed. I did have a look a few nights ago to see if I could identify any possible records that might be William and/or Susan in the UK Incoming Passenger Lists but unfortunately a lot of those records appear as 'Mr and Mrs' or by initial only. But certainly South Africa might be a likely option to explore. CT |

Hmm, yes, you may have a point about S Africa I guess... aargh!
I must say I was surprised to find what I did here, in the newspapers. There are U.S. connections via cousins - Boston, Massachusetts, Connecticut. (And not in farming or mining, so it is a possibility....) We'lll see. Meanwhile, I'm just relieved to have an identity for Susie!!

I have been following this thread today with interest as I have just discovered that it was "my" Harriet Rogers who married Robert Curnow. Harriet was the daughter of William Rogers and Elizabeth Kempthorne, so i thank you for the information here as it was further than I had managed to get
