Hi all, After a big gap from these wonderful boards I am back with a query please! I am researching my paternal side, being the Magor family. I am trying to trace quite recent ancestors, being the brothers and sisters of my Great Grandfather. Details as follows: John Magor (1845) m Nanny Ingram (1845) in Lanner in 1865 Annie b 1866 Samuel b 1871 David b 1873 Christopher b 1875 John b 1881 (died in South Africa in 1912 and was my Gt Grandfather) Mary Catherine (Minnie) b1876, married William Martin and died in 1972 The stumbling block that I have hit is that I have lost Samuel, David and Christopher completely! I can see them up to the 1891 census (at home) however after that they all disappear and I don't know where to look next! Any ideas would be gratefully received. I have a theory that as (Father) John seems to have probably died abroad (can't find his death record), as did their brother John and as they are all Miners it is possible that they went abroad to work however I am hitting a brick wall! Any help would be very gratefully received. Cheers, Cathy

Hi Cathy - from what you have said it does look possible South Africa might have been the destination of your missing Magors. If that is the case then finding them may not be easy. There are three things I can think of at the moment that you could try. 1. FamilySearch has some South AFrican records available so you could try searching those. Not a lot at the moment but worth a try anyway 2. NAAIRS is the National Archives for South Africa. If you just 'google NAAIRS you should find some links that might be helpful. 3. ROOTSWEB is another Ancestry-related site which from memory has a South African section. You could try there for some archived information or you may even be able to post some queries. Here is a link for NAAIRS that you might try:- www.national.archives.gov.za/naairs.htmCT

Hi Cathy, Another source (you may already know of it?) is The Genealogical Society of South Africa site, which has various record transcriptions and other sources. Their arrivals databases does have a J. Magor arriving in Cape Town in 1880 from Plymouth - can't be your great-grandfather, but perhaps a relative? Other than J. Magor, the only other Magor arrival transcribed is a Miss Magor who arrives at Cape Town from Plymouth in 1884.
