Not much to go on and the details we have will have been supplied at the time of his death so there is no guarantee just how accurate they might be. But at the moment I seem to have just one possible candidate in my database:- Thomas son of James and Sarah (nee Williams) Berriman baptized at St Ives 28th May 1835 If Thomas is supposed to have been in New Zealand since around 1862 it may be best if you tried searching passenger lists to see if you can find a possible candidate arriving during the years from about 1858 to 1868. That gives you a few years either side just in case. I see that Thomas was buried at Hokitaka 15th December 1898 Plot 4268 Block 169 but he is the only Berryman/Berriman showing up in the Westland Cemeteries database. The other resource you might try would be Electoral Rolls or Directories to see if you can find Thomas living with anyone else. If he was with anyone else, even if not a Berryman, then it might still offer some clues. Searching 'Papers Past' I found the Death Notice:- West Coast Times 14th December 1898 BERRYMAN - At the Westland Hospital on the 13th December, 1898, Thomas Berryman, miner, late of Hokitika, native of Cornwall, England. Aged 65 years. His Funeral Notice appeared in the same paper on the following day and referred to him as 'Captain Tom'. No relatives are mentioned or referred to with the notice beginning 'The Friends of the late Thomas Berryman (Captain Tom) are invited ......' All I can find at the moment. I should remind you that the Thomas I mentioned at the top (baptised 1835) is not necessarily the same man but is the closest I can find in my database at the moment. I have not done any work on the Berryman/Berriman families for a few years so have not pursued the family of James and Sarah to find marriages or deaths for their children. CT

Just a passing thought...
The supposed arrival date of around 1862 places the arrival smack in the middle of the "Maori Wars". Not sure what records are available, but it may be worth investigating if Thomas's arrival was as a part of a British Army (or navy?) contingent brought in to fight against the Maori tribes.

AHA! This last piece of information may help solve your problem. Could you tell me the name of the Informant on the Death Certificate please? From the information given I would say whoever the informant was had only limited information but must have been close enough to Thomas to know some basic details.
However, what this does now tell me is that Thomas Berryman was the following:-
Thomas Reynolds son of Job and Wilmot Berryman of Carn Tiscoe, miner was baptized at Lelant 30th December 1832
Job Berryman was baptized at Zennor 16th May 1802 to Daniel and Elizabeth (nee Berryman) Berryman. Job married Wilmot Reynolds at Madron 11th October 1828.
Is it possible that you might be able to send me a copy of this Death Certificate to add to my Berryman records please? If so then please let me know and I will send you my email address privately.

Hi Do you know if you can search for burials in Zennor. In NZ you can get photos etc of the cemeteries. Thanks

It depends on whether you want actual burial records or photos of headstones and the cemetery itself. Many of the records have been transcribed and are available on the Cornwall Online Parish Clerks database but I don't know about the headstones. I have checked BillionGraves and they have nothing for Zennor. Findagrave is a little more difficult because it does not seem to have a function to search for a specific cemetery.

Not on findagrave though!

Well burn me and butter me on both sides! I went into the Findagrave site and could find nowhere to enter a location other than by Country except for the US where you could select each State!

The trick is NOT to use the findagrave search engine. Use google - "findagrave + zennor" (without the quotes) gets you the page. Cheers Simon

Thanks Simon, that's good thinking. And perhaps something that should not have been beyond my thought processes! CT

Hi I've checked using what you suggested Simon but none of the Thomas's I want are there. I presume that not all graves have been photographed. Jeanette

Jeanette - considering the amount of people that would have been buried at Zennor there are actually very few headstones and from memory many of those still standing are very difficult to read if they can be read at all. As you can see from Simon's post there are just 42 interments recorded (presumably that means headstones) of which 95% have been photographed.
If you would like to send me a list of burials you are interested in I may be able to get the Parish Register entries for you.
